What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

The University of Manchester is a spectacular university, which has so much to offer for students, including over 400 societies and many students’ events. The university offers amazing learning facilities such as multiple libraries and learning spaces and also highly supportive staff and lecturers. A great education and okay student assistance

The university for me (cognitive neuroscience and psychology) offered me a great education, with fascinating and challenging content with a diverse range of skills learnt. I feel that the lecturers all are very knowledgable of their subject and are all contributing significantly to the field.

We were given a good opportunity to try many lab based techniques during the course which were all very relevant and had many opportunities to get extra experience.

My course coordinator was fantastic, giving help whenever she could and with speedy replies. She would also take much feedback and use it to evolve the course, which is something I think is vital and I respect.

The student support was okay, nothing particularly special, and I did hear of many people who had their queries take weeks for replies or were given poor or unhelpful answers. During the pandemic I was sorely disappointed at their effort for getting peoples placements delayed by a year, so instead would cancel these vital work experiences, a challenge I feel that they could’ve overcome.

Overall I would recommend UoM to a friend. It is a good university in a great location, you will get a solid education however may slip through the net of student support if challenges arise

The knowledge I got through practicals

The teachers are really nice, easily reachable. I study genetics but I am currently in my foundation year and I already have so many benefits. There is a really busy and good social life, including times we study together and party together. I definitely recommend it to so many students, as the Student Union here is so active as well. Except for the clubs, we can join like arts, international societies etc they also organize parties at weekends. so the social life expands not only because of parties but also because of work and studies.
My course is not easy but the teachers are so helpful and it’s very interesting as we also see real-life examples and work on experiments ourselves, so it’s not just theory. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.

    Great programme

The programme was great. Lecturers are highly specialised and the content is very in-depth. Very entertaining classes and lots of resources available outside of lectures. The university, in general, could have better organisation but overall it is a very good university, and the course content is just great.

As a current medical student, I can say that I’m really fortunate and very happy to be here. The course has been really enriching, the city and the student population is amazing and there’s always lots to do. The food is also top tier.

    The University of Manchester

I have really enjoyed my time so far at the university. It is in an ideal location, only 10 minutes away from the city centre. There’s so much to do and everybody is so friendly. Residential halls aren’t amazing but they’re great for meeting new people.

    Worth the money

I actually see where my money goes and also, the staff is really careful and caring. I feel confident if I happen to need help. There are lots of facilities for the students. However, there could be more workshops for some courses. Also, the prices in the university campus are ridiculously higher than even in the city centre, which doesn’t make sense provided that students go there.
