What Is a Philosophy Degree?

Contrary to popular belief, Philosophy degrees are not just about sitting and wondering about the meaning of life. This type of degree gives students a wider perspective about how to tackle different issues – thus preparing them for the outside world.

Philosophy degrees are shaped in such a way that encourages candidates to make use of logic and ethics for the in-depth study of fundamental issues.

Therefore, Philosophy enhances interpretive, analytical, imaginative, critical, and communicative skills. Candidates will acquire intellectual capacities which are of utmost importance for self-fulfilment and active participation in public life. In addition, they will experience success in a wide range of careers, such as law, business, education, journalism, and so on.

Benefits of a Philosophy Degree

The essential benefit gained from having a Philosophy degree is the mindset you acquire. Graduates learn how to constructively tackle major problems and come up with the best solutions.

Studies have shown that Philosophy is one of the most sought-after majors in Humanities in the market place. Why? The answer lies in the creative mindset and set of transferable skills that can be applied in various areas of expertise, not only Philosophy. What employers appreciate about Philosophy graduates is their problem-solving and thinking skills as well as their organised way of laying out information.

Last, but not least, those who pursue a Philosophy degree acquire numerous life skills, which can be applied both on a personal and professional level. Thus, they grow as individuals, through effective communication, critical thinking and the ability to see a problem from different angles.

Philosophy Degree Structure

Philosophy courses are usually three-year commitments and they come under the form of a Bachelor of Arts. The major concentrates on the history of Philosophy, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Justice and Values and so on. Furthermore, they can be easily combined with other minors.

My experience studying a triple major at Lancaster University

I studied History Politics and Philosophy at Lancaster University and overall my experience was good. I picked my degree in the hopes that I would learn about a diverse range of subjects and events that would help broaden my knowledge … and i did!

Studying a triple major meant that i got to pick from a substantial number of modules each year meaning that the course was never stagnant. I was able to pursue my interest in history whilst develop a new love for philosophy and politics. The facilities at Lancaster University also supported independent learning especially the library, which became my best friend!

Whilst there were some modules that i enjoyed more then others overall i got to expand my learning to include a healthy mixture of topics i was already familiar with as well as explore modules that were more alien. My one critique would be that because my degree comes under two different departments (history and PPR) i sometimes found the administration of my degree and my module choices to be confusing. However often times visiting the heads of both departments helped clarify any issues i may have had.

Overall I would definitely recommend Lancaster University especially if you are looking to study the humanities. The campus is very serene with a multitude of helpful facilities and services that enable effective studying. If you are someone who is struggling to fine tune your interests i highly recommend that you explore the different degree combinations you can get as it allows you to explore more subjects if you haven’t quite gotten to the place in which you are fully certain about what to study. However just be mindful that you have to be slightly more proactive about the management of your degree especially when it comes to picking modules for the next year.
