MSc Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies

UoG’s MSc REEES course offers an interesting opportunity for in-depth study of one of the world’s most fascinating regions, and at a time when focus on the area has been higher than ever. Beginning with a core class held by a number of the University’s leading academics, students will be able to develop a broad base of knowledge on various topics and locations before branching off into a more specialised focus. I found such a layout to be a major positive as students are broadly able to focus on the topics they wish to study without being forced to spend the entire year studying others they may not find as interesting. However, it is worth noting that timetabling conflicts at this stage, so be aware that you not may be able to join all of the classes you want.

The teachers themselves are also a major plus point for the course. Those within the CEES Faculty are all experts on the region and the experiences of both myself and my classmates have been very helpful, with a number of additional lectures offered in addition to a clear willingness to respond to queries. Although the specialist nature of the course has not assured me that it offers excellent career progression, the region’s importance and the university’s focus on other transferrable skills means it is far from an irrelevant degree.

The student experience in Glasgow is an excellent one, which I would highly recommend to prospective students. Glasgow is a bustling, exciting, friendly, and fun city that has everything to offer students, from many excellent cafes, bars, museums and some of the best nightlife of any city in the UK. The University also offers a variety of clubs and societies and has two student unions, in addition to a well-stocked library. There are a number of study buildings, although be warned that space is often limited. Whilst the city has a slightly negative reputation amongst some, Glasgow is a safe and friendly city perfect for students, particularly at UoG with its excellent location within the beautiful West End. Furthermore, the University’s high number of international students contributes both to the cosmopolitan feel and should assuage any fears potential international students may have over feeling at home (local Scot’s will also help with that – we’re a friendly bunch!).

Ultimately, I would definitely recommend applying for this course for those interested in the region, who are also seeking to live in one of the most exciting and genuine cities I have had the pleasure of visiting.

    Central and East European Studies

I had a fantastic opportunity to study Central and East European studies and Russian language at the University of Glasgow. This incredible five-year degree, which included a year abroad, allowed me to develop the ability to communicate in the Russian language, as well as equipped me with a profound understanding of the political and economic aspects of the region. The university itself has a great campus, not to mention all of the fantastic students!
