What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Best education money can buy

The University of Edinburgh is one of the best in the world, especially in the field I studied – machine learning. The lecturers are professional, knowledgeable and approachable, always finding ingenious ways to engage their audience.

The labs are well-equipped and the libraries are well stocked.

The projects for grades were well structured and explained. Most of them involved working in pairs or groups. I think this improved my social skills in myself and others. Furthermore, grouping people with different backgrounds made us more tolerant, understanding, and willing to teach each other in subjects where we were lacking familiarity.

As soon as I graduated I was able to find a job relatively easily. I believe my degree has equipped me with all the skills I needed to be required for the interviews.

    University Life

The University of Edinburgh is one of the most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom. As a student, there were many aspects dealing with academics and co-curricular that I enjoyed. The enterprising youth is indeed its greatest asset and every student should exploit this to the maximum. EdIntelligence and other start-up acceleration societies help people out in their pursuits. A caveat to watch out for is that demonstrations aren’t uncommon and it can result in class cancellation. The demonstrations are worsened by the fact that students sometimes occupy buildings and access to those buildings are then limited. These groups are fringe, left wing and tend to be very vocal, however violence isn’t known in this part of the world.
Opportunities are available particularly from large commercial banking companies like JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley as well as large tech firms such as Facebook, Google and Amazon(they hold university events as well)
All in all Edinburgh is a fantastic place for young enterprising and intelligent youth ready to set foot on the real world.

Lively campus and city, with degrees of variable quality

For some specific courses and degrees, the quality of the teaching and the organization is inadequate. My degree (computer science) was much nicer, with some occasional sour notes but also some fantastic and inspiring professors and access to great research. Edinburgh uni has a very international vibe and campus, which definitely enriched my experience. Edinburgh is an extraordinary place to live, even though finding a good accomodation on a limited budget can be tricky.

A really great place to study

UoE is a great place to study. The Uni takes a lot of effort to ensure that students have an easy time navigating academia. Facilities are all quite good and well-managed. There is a lot of flexibility in choosing courses and programs. Loved my time there studying Artificial Intelligence.

    You are the main character

Edinburgh is a great university for most degrees and depending on what courses you choose your life can be easier or harder – it all depends on you. The student body is a great mixture of nationalities and you make friends for life, living in the city is great and there’s something for everyone – nature or party lovers. One thing you should know before coming here is how there is a LOT of opportunities career and personal-growth wise (at least in Informatics), however you will have to be the person who looks for those opportunities. Nothing is handed on a plate and if you do want something, it is your job to find ways of how to get it.

I’ve rated the professors on a lower scale, but it includes the school itself as well as there were a lot of problems regarding timely and thorough feedback, mostly because some courses accepted too many students than the current staff could handle and I really hope the uni stops doing that in the future. It doesn’t benefit either of the parties. Some professors also were not really engaging since quite a few of them are forced to do the courses as part of their daily research job, which is the main driving force in Informatics for UoE – Research. However, there were some professors that actually made me love the courses I was doing, so again – really depends. Don’t be afraid to ask other students what they thought of certain courses before taking them!

Overall, positive experience and I wish I could come back again one day in the future.

    Amazing academic programme

After graduating from Edinburgh, I have struggled to find people from other universities, who were given an education as deep as the one I received. I am completely satisfied with the quality of teaching, as well as the content of the lectures.

Great Education, City and Student Life!

Definitely recommend it. The school of informatics, where I did my MSc, is among the best in the world and the city is beautiful and ideal for the student experience. The workload can be a bit much, but that’s not unexpected and can be easily handled with good time management.

Ability to learn from some of the smartest in their respective fields

Generally had a great 5 years at university. I learned a lot and found that I had great career prospects after graduating from Edinburgh. Edinburgh valued independence a lot and had a great variety of courses to choose from in my degree.

    Great infrastructure and resources!

Great place to meet all kinds of people, do all sorts of activities and dive into your studies. The city offers you all the cultural events you need, and it’s not too big. There are some very weak lecturers in Informatics, but also some absolutely outstanding ones (shout-out to the legendary KK and Boris Grot!).__Infrastructure is constantly renovated and tutorials can be quite fun.__If I had to complain about anything it would be the late and vague feedback…
