I’m currently studying Psychology at Durham University. The collegiate system, and the sense of community which this provides, is perhaps the most commendable aspect of the University. The social and extra-curricular opportunities which this provides has been the source of many of my fondest memories at university. Being able to so easily join sports teams (regardless of your ability) and take part in a wide range of societies is a distinctive positive of Durham’s collegiate system.
From an academic perspective, I’ve found the teaching to be of a very high quality. I’ve also appreciated the amount of support, academic or otherwise, which students are given access to.
Despite these positives I would say that Durham University could improve its facilities. When I first joined I wasn’t particularly impressed by the facilities, especially considering the prestigious nature of the uni. The number of sports pitches seems very low considering so many students consistently participate in sports. I also get the impression that some departments receive significantly more investment into their facilities, whilst other departments are stuck in aging buildings.
Overall, I would highly recommend Durham University. Although it could improve its facilities, I massively enjoy my time there and am very satisfied with the education it has provided me with so far.
