I have recently finished my first year of a Bsc in mathematics and statistics at Durham University and am extremely grateful for the support I have received this year. The lecturers and staff were overwhelmingly supportive; they would always make time at the end of the lectures to ask questions one to one; they would make an office hour every week if I needed to ask any larger or more private questions; then there was tutorials, which were small groups of 30 people and a professor who could assist us in a more hands on manner than in lectures.
The sporting opportunities are terrific, with amazing facilities that are open to everyone. There is a huge emphasis on sport and the majority of students partake in something sporting related.
My only complaint is the amount of work you receive as a maths student and the expectation that you should understand everything taught after a week of lectures and tutorials is slightly far fetched given the limited amount of free time I have to revise notes.
I have made a wonderful group of friends with little challenge due to the great support I received from the upper years on the first week when arriving. Overall it has a great experience so far.
