Over the three years, starting University during COVID was definitely a struggle. My first year consisted of online learning and no face to face teaching. The second year was partially all online too and my last year consisted of strikes all year round, which deteriorated my ability to get the full university experience I had hoped for. Despite this, the friends and the community I had indulged in made a massive effect and helped me get through the three years.
View moreI study English Literature which is often seen as a boring and basic course. However, at Cardiff we are encouraged to explore all aspects of English. In your first year you are offered opportunities in creative writing, as well as analysing texts from all points of history (medieval to contemporary) and all genres and types of literature (plays, poems, novels, even films and TV are examined).
The faculty are invested in each and every person’s ability to thrive and find their passion, what they’re best at and what they love.
I could not recommend Cardiff enough for an English lit student.
View moreThe environment both around the university and city but also within classes is one that feels incredibly non-judgemental, opening up the space for creativity and learning. This continues into their disability support systems that allow disabled students to interact with materials in the ways that are manageable for them.
While the academic side of the university is overall a positive atmosphere then this does not extend to the university housing. The Talybont admin/pastoral team in particular can have a hostile attitude towards students with housing issues. In addition to this there is a call out fee for security and the accommodation itself is regularly unlocked due to the locks being broken, furthermore, vital repairs can take weeks and there is no rental compensation for this.
Doing a degree is supposedly the point in someone’s education that they fully come to love (or hate) their field of study. Cardiff University does everything in its power to push students towards the former, as it provides those studying with all the tools and resources to learn more. The lecturers are passionate and helpful, the library facilities are superb, and the general atmosphere is one of people who are willing and eager to be the best they can be in their field. Even in the tough times presented by COVID 19 and industrial action I never felt as if my needs weren’t met, and would highly recommend the university to anyone interested in both a lovely and affordable city and a satisfying education experience.

View moreThe best thing about my course is the teachers and the students are so friendly. My student accommodation is good value because there are great people and my room is a good size with lots of space. The Maths building could be updated but the Students’ Union building is excellent – very modern.
View moreI love the Student’s Union and would have rated it a ‘6’ if I had the option. They sell lots of cheap drinks. I’m also really impressed with my course as there is lots of contact time and help is easy to get. The University facilities are excellent but maps should be provided.
View moreGreat nightlife, great course! The Students’ Union has everything we could wish for. The best thing about my course is the outstanding way lectures are presented. My accommodation is very good value for money, but it’s very far from the Students’ Union.
View moreThe University offers great student support and counselling, and the Union is fairly modern. The best part of my course are the lectures. My favourite thing to do in the City is sightsee, as I love Cardiff. The ASSL library and the John Percival building need updating. My student accommodation is quite old/basic but has a great atmosphere.
View moreThe Students’ Union is a fun night out. My accommodation is very good – lively and clean. My favourite thing to see in the City is Cardiff Castle. I think it would be fairly easy to get a job after University.
