An okay university.

Having just finished university I feel both happy to have achieved my goals and sad to leave the city and the great people I met during my time here.

Although my time at Cardiff Met was filled with hills and valleys, I firmly believe that in the end you reap what you sow.

If you go to university to enjoy yourself and have a three year long break of going out and partaking in the occasional revision session; then you’re going to the right place.

Similarly; if you want to knuckle down and leave university head and shoulders above the rest you’re also going to the right place.

University is a mindset, where ever you go the teaching and qualifications will ultimately be the same. It’s your mindset that allows you to utilise the tools that the university supplies you with to progress further in life.

Having given my opinion on what university actually is, I’ll move on to the university itself.

The school itself is filled with countless opportunities too much to list here, but if you want to do anything you have the ability to do so with funding and support throughout.

I myself started a Jiu-Jitsu group where we trained every Tuesday in the large sports center, where the university provided funding for future ventures and mats for us to train on.

The Concord campus focuses primarily on sports and teaching qualifications, this is evident in the facilities available on campus.

– A large indoor facility with a suspended running track, sand pit, any piece of equipment you need.

– and outdoor athletic track.

– two gyms on campus one for strength and conditioning and Olympic lifting, the other for recreational training.

– numerous fields, hockey, football, rugby and a 3G pitch.

– indoor basketball, tennis, netball and badminton court. And a large swimming pool.

As you can see if you want to be proficient at sports this is the university to come to.

With the learning, again you reap what you sow. The lecturers give you the information and ability to process yourself, but it is very much self taught.

I found that some lecturers were fully focused on their students, providing them with every avenue to succeed.

Where others were interested in providing you with the information and not aiding you with anything else.

I often felt as if I couldn’t approach some lecturers as they would shrug you off and make you feel as if you shouldn’t be asking the questions you’re asking.

I’m a strong believer that there are no stupid questions, if someone feels the need to ask a questions and you are the person can provide them with an answer, you should do so as they feel this information is so important they’re willing to speak up.

There was much to be desired in the way of teaching at Cardiff met, the larger groups up to 120 people in a theatre made me feel a bit of disconnection between the students and the lecturer.

It felt as though the lecturers were speaking to an empty class and just reciting their slides, whereas in the smaller classes you can feel the connection with the lecturers, and their work.

To summarise:

If you want to knuckle down in sports, teaching and recreation then you should attend this university.

You won’t be let down, but if you’re still a bit green around the gills and you’re looking to extend your summer vacations rethink going to university.

A lot of my friends right now are jobless, and feel as though they wasted their time at Cardiff met.

Yet if you knuckle down like myself you can land a job before or just after leaving.

It’s a great opportunity to live and work at Cardiff met, so don’t squander it.
