Muhimbili University is the first established medical university college in Tanzania, founded in 1963 to train medical doctors and fill the gap in medical personnel in post-colonial Tanzania. Located in Dar es Salaam, the university is currently one of the leading medical universities in healthcare, training, research, and consultancy services in East Africa.
Academic Excellence:
MUHAS offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs in medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, public health, and allied sciences. The curriculum is competency-based, with a strong emphasis on practical training, community engagement, and problem-solving skills. The university also hosts specialized programs in emerging fields such as genomics, bioinformatics, and global health.
Clinical Training and Facilities
The university is closely affiliated with Muhimbili National Hospital and Mloganzila Hospital, providing students with access to tertiary-level clinical exposure. This hands-on training model equips graduates with the competencies required in high-demand clinical environments.
Capacity Building and International Partnerships
MUHAS maintains strong partnerships with international universities, research networks, and global health organizations. These collaborations enhance capacity building, offer faculty and student exchange opportunities, and support multi-country research projects.
Infrastructure and Student Life:
Muhas is currently investing in infrastructure, including lecture halls, laboratories, libraries, and digital learning platforms. However, the university still faces concerns with infrastructure, including student accommodation. This has been led mostly but the expanding need as institutions grow. Located in Dar es Salaam, the busiest city in Tanzania, students have a wider chance to experience Tanzanian life, with malls, recreational areas, beaches, and a nightlife like no other in Africa.
This is among the best medical schools I’ve came across due to the nature of commitment they emphasize on students on being the best in their fields. It’s really really interesting being a part of such an incredible school.
The professors are really committed on helping students becomes the best
Though there are some challenges specifically not enough classes to take on all students
In my opinion, MUHAS is an exceptional medical university for anyone aiming to pursue a healthcare career. The overall experience has been deeply rewarding, blending the study of complex medical topics with real-world patient interactions. Being part of patient management alongside medical specialists, who also serve as our tutors, has provided a practical and enriching learning experience. Despite the continuous stress from numerous exams throughout the academic year, the education and training received are unparalleled.
