History of the University to the Present Day
The institution was founded as in 1898 and began teaching its first classes of students the following year. At this time the embroidery industry in St. Gallen was booming. Since its beginnings the university has expanded and now focuses its teaching and research on various areas of commerce and law, as well as ensuring students receive a theoretically and practically balanced education while studying there.
HSG Students and Study Options
Today approximately 8,500 students attend HSG from undergraduate all the way to doctoral and professional levels. A significant portion (around 25%) of HSG students are international students who come from all over the globe. The university itself has 200 partner institutions all over the world where HSG students can spend exchange terms and therefore gain experience from studying abroad, or they may also earn a double degree thanks to HSG working with these partners. These partner institutions include Columbia University, Copenhagen Business School, Dartmouth College, Imperial College London, New York University, and Northwestern University.
Academically the university is organised into five schools, namely the School of Management, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Law School, School of Finance, and the School of Economics and Political Science.
Student Life at HSG
Outside of their studies students have many cultural and sporting options in which they can take part, such as the Sports Hall and sports programmes run by the university.
Additionally, HSG’s location means much of Europe, for example Munich and Paris, is easily accessible by train and by air, allowing students to travel easily within the continent during their time off.
