What is an Architecture Degree?

Architecture is a specialisation preferred by many young people who love solving problems, have a passion for creativity, or an innovative imagination ready to be shown off.

Over the years, it has become a very popular speciality. Young people are aware of the importance and diversity of Architecture, but also of the need for a permanent practice, as most Architecture courses aim at the practical part, to implement feasible structures not only on paper, through sketches, but also in real life.

Architects can choose to grow in all markets or follow a single specialisation, such as Landscape Architect, Resident Architect, Urban Designer, Green Design Architect or Interior Designer, according to their preferences.

Benefits of an Architecture Degree

Usually, a major reason that motivates students to study Architecture is the possibility of having an impact on their community. How do they do this? By exploring the world, analysing people’s work on constructions and looking for answers to identified problems, they become more creative, more open to new things, bringing a new vision to the world.

Critical thinking skills are constantly being developed by graduates who study Architecture because they get the opportunity to visualise the structures before they are made.

Upon completion of studies, there are many possibilities for employment, and salaries can be generous. A particular increase in the employment rate is expected to be in the Green Design field. This requires creating environmentally-friendly constructs that do not harm nature and generate sustainability.

Architecture Degree Structure

Young people must have a university degree in Architecture to pursue a career in that field, that is an Architecture Bachelor or Master of Architecture. Often, undergraduate programmes last 5 years, and Master programmes last between 2 and 3 years, depending on the chosen university and the form of education followed. One notable thing is that Master programmes are often for those who have not completed a Bachelor’s specialisation, and that is why the course component can be similar to the Bachelor’s. As far as Doctoral programmes are concerned, the duration is 3 years, and the architects work on research projects.

At the same time, it should be mentioned that the United States and other territories have introduced a professional license Architect Registration Examination. This is a mandatory exam which tests the candidate’s skills, abilities and knowledge. In the UK, for example, the final registration to become an architect is regulated by the Architects Registration Board.

Although the list of courses may differ from one country to another, some of the most important modules for a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture are Computer Assisted Drawing (CAD), Physics, Visualisation, Science, and Technology.

Throughout their studies, students can take part in various internship programmes or choose a tutor architect to work with. In this way, they get a better idea of what this profession is about in practice and gain the necessary experience needed for their professional development.

    Nice

I liked the quality of teaching and the life at Valencia is so enjoyable. However I found that some of the contents, mostly in my degree, were old fashioned, learning to calculate structures by pen and paper, and not using BIM at all. Later on I studied at same university a master degree of BIM, though, and it was very nice to complete my formation.

    University offer and extraordinary campus

The Polytechnic University of Valencia was where I did my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. As for the facilities it offers, they are extraordinary because the campus offers you as a student many facilities to train both academically and professionally, as well as develop links with the people of the university through programs or in spaces focused for this, such as the Casa de l’Alumne or sports facilities. On the other hand, the degree I studied is very well planned and you have many facilities to develop your ideas. My experience as a student was very positive in this university.

    My experience in technical architecture

I must admit that both the location of the school and the distribution of the facilities are quite good, but for an architecture school, it could have chosen better materials, since it is quite cold (and more now with the issue of ventilation by the pandemic). Of course, the race is tougher than I thought.

Obviously, being in engineering, I did not expect it to be an easy degree to take, but I did not expect it to be so complex to achieve a course per year. What’s more, few students succeed. If it is true that the first course is quite passable, since it is more like a kind of introduction, but the step to second is quite intense. The change from one course to another is very noticeable, I feel that in the first they either do not give you the sufficient level or in the second they demand more than what they play with the base that they have given us.

As for teachers … Honestly, there are few who, at least in my opinion, deserves the title of good teachers, since there are two or three who really arouse your passion for the career, those who make going to your subject is a real joy. With this, I do not mean that the rest of the teachers are horrible, but that some are not the best at explaining, others miss their classes and others demand a higher level in their exams than they have taught in class.

All this has contributed to the fact that I have been studying this degree for more than four years and, honestly, I have not left it because it is something I would like to dedicate myself to in the future, but if you consider entering because the cut-off mark is low, think of something else. I think that if your vocation is not really this, there is no point in trying to study it because it is quite tough.

Ah! And we must not forget that with this career you do not become an architect who defines the design of construction and how it is carried out, that is the function of a superior architect. The technical architect is the one who is in charge of supervising that the construction is being carried out correctly, but not the design since I have seen more than one case of students who entered this career by confusing it with superior architecture.

    Good standard but outdated.

School of Architecture with a lot of tradition and a good level, with acceptable facilities but it is urgent to update, both in infrastructure and in the teaching profile and the training system. There are some subjects that seem to have been given for years in the same way that even the presentations are like they were made in windows 98. It is necessary to renew the teaching team and have more up-to-date training being more open to the community and new technologies. Collective work and a creative environment are not promoted.

    A great university campus

The best of the Polytechnic University of Valencia is undoubtedly the campus that surrounds it. A green city where you can enjoy university life in its entirety. The campus facilities are wonderful, although the bureaucracy of the institution itself makes it difficult to access any of them. In addition, you must pay for certain services that I think would be beneficial if it were free for students.

On the other hand, as for the classes themselves, I miss a greater internationalization of degrees. A university like this should be a pioneer in English classes, exchange programs and internships abroad. Unfortunately, according to which one of these is a bit complicated to achieve. On the other hand, regarding services such as the library or the student’s house should be open 24 hours a day. It is a joy to see how the school facilities are available at any time of the day in universities such as Munich.

However, it is true that the facilities are incredible and that you have the latest technologies to study. In addition, schools are in continuous renovation, something to consider for an institution with more than 50 years that also suffers from the passage of time. Without a doubt, the Polytechnic University of Valencia is a great choice to study, whether you are a national or exchange student who wants to spend a great experience in a city as wonderful as Valencia.

The best polytechnic university of Spain

It has a large university campus with a lot of services dedicated to students. In addition, the university has the best laboratories. There is a huge network of services and associations for students. It is one of the Spanish universities most involved in the Erasmus program and receives more than 2000 international students every year. In addition, all internships are remunerated.
