My experience with the International University of Valencia (VIU) has evolved from an academic disappointment to a legal and ethical crisis of confidence.
1. False Advertising Confirmed, Over 140 Days of Waiting and Termination: I applied for an internship on October 24, 2025. On March 16, 2026, after a 143-day wait, the university confirmed in writing that it was not possible to assign me a placement due to a lack of agreements and asked me to find one myself. This explicitly contradicts the “Direct Assignment” option they sold me, along with promises of agreements with the EU and the UN for internships in Ireland.
Internships are mandatory; without them, the degree is inaccessible. Furthermore, the suggestion that I “find my own placement” is unrealistic and impossible for an international student without local networks, leaving me in a dead end and stalling my career plans in Ireland.
Given this fundamental breach, I formally notified the university of my intention to terminate my contract on March 16th. However, the university is ignoring my termination: they continue to send automated course notifications, are not stopping charges, and are refusing to process a refund, acting as if the contract were still in effect.
2. Total Collapse of Support Channels: I have exhausted all internal channels without obtaining any real solution:
– VIUparaTi: My complaint was filed without a substantive response.
– Career Coordination and Management: They ignored my requests for urgency and alternatives.
– Student Advocate: Declared that “he can only take improvement measures” and referred the case to the GDPR team, without decision-making power.
The result is a “passing the buck” system where no department takes responsibility. This is not an isolated case: the same ineffectiveness has been seen in massive student complaints about:
– Unfair invalidation of exams by the facial recognition system (Smowl) without objective evidence.
– Poorly written exams with invalid options that prevented correct answers.
Conclusion: The student support structure exists on paper, but in practice it is ineffective. It does not resolve conflicts, does not protect students, and has no power to overturn administrative or academic decisions.
3. Refusal to Provide My Data (GDPR): I requested, under Article 15 of the GDPR, the recordings of my registration calls (May-September 2025). The university responded with incomplete data and, after my complaint, categorically stated that these recordings “do not exist,” contradicting its own quality-based recording policy.
To date, they have not provided any technical evidence (logs or records) to demonstrate why there are no recordings of the sales phase.
4. Current Situation: As of today, May 7, 2026, the university has ignored my requests for withdrawal or refund, based on “closed enrollment” clauses and failed to fulfill its essential obligation to provide the contracted service.
Advice for prospective students: Don’t trust promises of “international agreements” or the “Direct Assignment” option. Don’t expect any internal department (VIUparaTi, Coordination, Ombudsman) to help you: their track record shows they ignore serious complaints and pass the buck.
If you live outside of Spain, exercise extreme caution: The distance and lack of quick access to local oversight bodies make you vulnerable to the university ignoring your cancellations and illegally charging you. My case demonstrates that the university prioritizes revenue over the law, exploiting the vulnerability of international students who cannot defend themselves as quickly as local students.
If you value legal transparency, keeping promises, and a real chance of graduating, avoid this university.
I just finished my master’s degree at this university, and it’s been one of the best opportunities of my academic life. I’ve worked for years, which didn’t allow me to fully dedicate myself to my studies. But I was finally able to focus, completing the master’s degree in a short time, passing everything with great effort.
I’m incredibly grateful to my professors for their patience, for believing in me, and for supporting me throughout this process. The curriculum is perfectly adapted to the real needs of this field, which made a huge difference.
Furthermore, the academic environment was incredible. I met students from other parts of the world who shared with me how much they also enjoyed and appreciated the master’s program. I still keep in touch with my classmates to this day. So I wholeheartedly recommend this university.
View moreStudying at the University of Valencia has been a truly enriching experience. One of the aspects I value most is the university’s ability to offer a balanced lifestyle. The academic workload is demanding, but there is also room to enjoy personal life, extracurricular activities, and time with friends. The university environment promotes both academic excellence and well-being, making it easier for students to manage stress and stay motivated throughout the semester.
The study materials and resources provided by the university are modern and up to date. Whether it’s textbooks, digital platforms, or access to research tools, I always felt well-equipped to succeed in my courses. The professors often incorporate current topics and recent developments in their lectures, which keeps learning dynamic and relevant. It’s clear that the university takes academic quality seriously and invests in providing students with the best possible tools.
Another important highlight is the strong job prospects that come with a degree from the University of Valencia. Many programs include internships or connections with companies and institutions both in Spain and abroad. Personally, I’ve seen how this degree can open doors even in my home country, where international education and practical experience are highly valued. The university’s reputation definitely adds weight to my CV.
What also impressed me was the support I received from university administration. From the first day, I noticed how approachable and responsive the staff were. They were always willing to answer questions, help with documents, or guide students through various procedures. For international students like me, this made a big difference. Whether I needed help with a visa issue, course registration, or simply finding the right contact person, someone was always there to assist — and in English, which made the process much easier.
View moreIt has been the worst experience with a university both nationally and internationally. I signed up to get points on the competition scale and I made my intentions clear from the beginning. I spoke with those in charge because I wanted to be clear about when the TFM defense dates would be and if they could be brought forward if necessary. In several emails they told me that it would be done without a problem and at the moment of truth they left me and other students stranded and did not want to advance dates by 5 days, which was what we needed. I tried calling, also sending several emails, and they blocked me from the orientation, without answering our questions and without giving us explanations. The student advocate ignored our emails. They wash their hands of any problem and only care about the money they have earned.
The master’s degree has an irregular workload; 4 ECTS subjects require the same amount of activities and require the same hours of effort as those with 9 ECTS. The ICT subjects are completely outdated and not updated and the teachers read the slides directly, except for 2/3, so nothing is learned. I have lost money, energy, motivation and time. The
TFM tutors, for the most part, ignored us all and did not even respond to our emails.
Don’t get involved in this scam, there are better universities.
