Spending a semester at the University of Huelva (UHU) through the Erasmus program was a memorable and enriching experience. The staff, especially those from the International Relations Office, were warm and accommodating—though you often need to make the first move, as they tend to give students space to explore independently.
Campus El Carmen is spacious and scenic, with plenty of spots to relax or hang out with friends. Late winter (February) and early spring (March–April) brought cold, rainy days—likely due to its proximity to the sea—but once spring fully arrived, both the campus and the city truly came to life.
UHU organizes various activities for Erasmus and international students, including cultural tours, small competitions, and an end-of-semester concert (which sadly I missed but heard great things about!). There are also other events posted on bulletin boards across campus or on their Instagram, although many of these are more accessible if you speak Spanish.
Academically, I studied Spanish A1 and a Spanish literature subject under the Humanities Department. The classes were generally relaxed—some requiring 80% attendance, while others were more flexible. Unlike what some international students expected, homework and attendance were part of my experience. Most courses don’t hold classes on Fridays, which gives you more time to explore or travel.
Facilities-wise, the university has a large library, three comedors (canteens/coffee shops), a small bank and ATM, and a bus stop. The nearby Holea Mall is just behind the campus. The classrooms are well-equipped, and some have heating and A/C. The staff and professors were friendly and helpful—many didn’t speak much English, but they always made an effort to communicate, just like most Andalusians do.
UHU is also very engaged in internationalization. They host events like International Week, where partner universities present opportunities for future exchanges. They even offer part-time job listings for students through their international portal.
Overall, I found UHU to be a welcoming and comfortable place to study, especially in the final year of my undergraduate studies. I appreciated the balance between academic responsibilities and personal exploration.
View moreHi! I am a student of sports science in this university and I have to tell that the installations are very bad.
In this university, I had to do athletics on one and football in another stadium because we don’t have these installations.
My experience as an Erasmus student was not that good. Starting from the teachers, they are supposed to teach in English but they just don’t know the language very well, that is why the performance is poor as well as what arrives to the student in terms of study content. To follow with the complete lack of heating system in all the buildings except for the library (where the people who don’t use laptops like to occupy the only few spots with sockets). The organization is very poor, it will very often happen that a communication of a canceled class will not be done, having you waking up early in the morning to find out there was not class that day, not to count that 1 hour and half spent on the bus to go and come back from the university (if you live in La Merced and don’t have a bike, which would easily get stolen after 2 days after the purchase).
View moreA welcoming university. In spite of not being very big, it offers very good services and resources to the students and the teaching staff is attentive and close. The facilities are adequate and beautiful, some buildings are part of the city’s heritage. I would recommend it without hesitation.
View moreThe University of Huelva is a “small” and “young” university, which makes it a very close university, with many accessible services. In addition, the city of Huelva is a very comfortable and manageable city, with many students (national and international) so it has a university atmosphere without losing its essence of “people”
