My experience at the UAB has generally been good. It’s a very beautiful campus with a great atmosphere among students, degree programs, and faculties. During my four years, I haven’t faced any major personal incidents, and the minor ones were communicated and resolved without much trouble. However, during this time, I’ve also observed how institutions always lag behind society. While this happens with all institutions, universities should be a beacon of change and progress, as they are where the near future of our community is being shaped. Unfortunately, the UAB has not lived up to expectations, at least in my view.
After two professors were accused of assaulting one or more students, the university’s response was very poor, slow, and disproportionate, leaving the students unprotected and having to attend classes with their aggressors. On another note, the repeated presence of openly fascist organizations on campus has been allowed. I believe it is necessary to be very critical in this regard (and in all areas that jeopardize the safety and well-being of students) and not overlook the lack of effective protocols at the university.
Personally, I have greatly enjoyed my years at this university and would recommend it. But while the Autonomous University of Barcelona has many positive aspects and is a very pleasant place to pursue a degree, it must be noted that it does not live up to the values it aims to project to the world that prevail in its classrooms.
