University life for a third year can be very stressful because for majority it is their final year. Students stress about the life after university, on whether they are going to get in into honours or what’s the next step after graduation.

NWU has quite amazing facilities on campus. Their lecture rooms are well maintained and inviting. It has aesthetic scenery that makes you enjoy walking on campus.
They have a vibrant student life with jam packed activities that educate and keep you entertained. It has a very inclusive learning environment.

The crisp Potchefstroom air in 2020 wasn’t just invigorating; it buzzed with anticipation for me. Fresh off my Bachelor’s degree, I embarked on the Honours in Molecular Biochemistry program at North-West University, my heart brimming with a potent mixture of excitement and nervousness. I imagined the program as a deep dive – a microscopic exploration of the intricate dance between molecules that underlies all life. It totally surpassed my expectations, offering an intellectually stimulating journey with moments of pure fascination punctuated by the occasional late-night study sessions

The Module on “Advanced Protein Biochemistry” stood out for me as a transformative turning point. The once-static textbook diagrams morphed into vibrant 3D structures on our computer screens, the whirring of the projectors a constant hum as we explored the intricate folds and functionalities of these fascinating molecules. The air crackled with a sense of discovery as we delved into the relationship between protein structure and function, the clinking of glass vials filled with protein solutions a constant melody in the lab. This course wasn’t just about memorizing complex pathways; it was about fostering a deeper understanding of the elegant machinery of life itself – a skillset that will be invaluable in any future biochemistry research endeavor.

The detailed research papers and the intricate details of metabolic pathways could feel like an overflowing petri dish at times. Prospective students be on the look out to strengthen your time management skills – juggling coursework, research projects, and lab work. You will need focus and organization. This university is unique in a way that it provides good experience for students in it such as being a guidian of your own it still has orientation which reminds us discipline and I think it should stick onto that. It is isolated from townships it is in suburbs where there’s peace unlike other institutions like UJ which are in big cities like Joburg where students can be even peer pressurized by nature so NWU is unique does not have all that it’s isolated from places like that i.e Potchefstroom Campus.

I wanted to learn more about this invisible power, so I enrolled in North-West University’s BSc (Hons) Applied Radiation Science program. Radiation was not only a theoretical idea in this world; rather, it was a dynamic instrument that had the capacity to diagnose, treat, and even power our future. This is how I imagined the program to be. It was an exciting experience, with the soothing “click” of Geiger counters detecting invisible radiation, the late-night illumination of computer screens as we processed our data, and the rhythmic spinning of centrifuges in the lab.

One notable turning point was the medical physics course. Don’t learn tedious radiation dosage formulae by heart. This course was about using invisible light beams to see into the human body instead of scalpels! The clean lab became a battleground against illness, with the steady beeps of radiation machines serving as a background noise while we devised treatment plans and carefully calculated the dosage required to target tumors with the least amount of damage to healthy tissue. It was unlike anything I had ever experienced, our shared sensation of astonishment as we saw the invisible power of radiation mending from within. This training focused on using radiation power for the noble goal of saving lives rather than just imparting technical knowledge.
It imparted a deep understanding of the careful planning and moral concerns that go into each radiation therapy, which is a crucial ability for any future medical physicist. There were unnoticed obstacles in the program. Sometimes it feels like an impossible task to understand a spool of high-voltage wire when attempting to navigate the maze-like world of radiation laws and grasp complicated radiobiology principles. Future students embarking on this journey should be ready for a demanding program that calls for a solid background in math and physics as well as a lot of perseverance. However, the NWU faculty served as a consistent source of direction and encouragement, like to the steady glow of a well-maintained isotope source. In addition to being very intelligent individuals, lecturers were also amiable mentors who were eager to share their excitement for clarifying difficult ideas.

One of the best institutions in terms of environment and atmosphere. The spirit and culture is very engaging. I would recommend it. It has a broad range of courses, for undergraduates as well as a few honor degrees in case you want to further your studies. My personal experience has been eye-opening to say the least.

I’ll be honest, my initial experience at North-West University was overwhelming. The administrative issues regarding registration were tedious and frustrating. The registration fee of over R12,000 was also a significant financial burden. Moving to a new province with a predominantly Afrikaans-speaking population was a huge cultural adjustment, which reflected in my academic performance.

However, I was fortunate to receive assistance from the SRC fund, which helped me cover some of my basic needs. The academic counseling services also provided invaluable support, helping me get back on track. With time, I adjusted to the new environment and culture.

One challenge I faced was finding suitable accommodation. As a newcomer, I found that most of the good accommodations were taken by senior students, leaving limited options that were not very safe. Nevertheless, I persevered and eventually settled in.

Overall, while my experience at North-West University was challenging at first, I eventually found my footing and received the support I needed to succeed.
