What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

    Great

The varsity experience has been a game changer for me…I’ve learned so much, not just academically, but also about myself and the world around me. The varsity has provided me with a supportive environment, amazing friends, and opportunities that I never thought I’d have. I’m excited to see what the future holds and I’m grateful for the journey so far. There’s still so much more to learn and experience, and I’m stoked to be on this path. Five stars wouldn’t be enough to rate this incredible journey.

    Celebrating a milestone

Three years have flown by, and I am proud to share that I have officially completed my undergraduate degree (BCom in Marketing and tourism Management sciences )@ North-West University .

Looking back, I started as a confused first-year student who had applied for a BSc in Biochemistry and Microbiology and finally got accepted for a marketing and tourism degree unsure of where I truly belonged. But life has a way of redirecting us toward our passions. I discovered my love for Marketing and Tourism during my first year, 2nd semester, and from that moment, everything changed.

     From Uncertainty to Excellence
    • I embraced the challenges of shifting fields and built confidence in my new path.
    • I excelled academically while also making a difference through peer mentoring and student empowerment.
    • I turned passion into purpose, contributing to the growth of others while growing myself.

    Tasks Accomplished & Lessons Learned
    • Hosting sessions and planning events to support first-year students in navigating campus life.
    • Guiding peers through resources like the library, counselling, tutoring, and academic advising.
    • Building resilience, leadership, and creativity through every challenge faced.

    Great

Studying at NWU has been a journey of discovery. Lecturers are knowledgeable and approachable, encouraging us to engage beyond the classroom. Research opportunities sharpened my skills, and societies made campus life vibrant. I joined leadership programs that built confidence, though Wi-Fi remains a weak sometimes with low connectivity .Cultural events highlight diversity, and counseling services provide support to us especially during exams. NWU has given me more than knowledge, itt’s given me resilience, friendships, and a sense of belonging that will last beyond graduation. I highly recommend,

    Overall experience at NWU

I really like the culture of the university,it is diverse in a lot of ways but also has a lack of importamce of certain cultures.A lot of people feel invalidated due to racial discrimination as well as a lot of stereotyping takes place against members of the lgbtqi community.I learn a lot from my lecturers and they inspire me to reach my potential most of the time.Campus life is quite fun a lot of activities are provided in order to make it vibrant, campus life teaches you how to grow and to get out of your comfort zone and to put yourself out there.

    Experience at university

The university is overall fantastic. The staff and the lecturers are very friendly and helpful. But I would recommend that you increase the security a little more. For example if you’re the passenger of a students car they only check the students (driver) card and not the passengers. Since there is a spike robberies and girls being attacked on campus, I recommend that they check that the passenger is also a student before they let them in.

    Insightful and engaging

Tourism at NWU is practical and engaging. Field trips connect theory to reality, and clubs like debate sharpen confidence. Admin communication can be slow, but overall, the balance of academics and social life makes NWU a rewarding place to study and grow.
