Not Typical Single-Subject Degree

North-West University’s BA in Psychology, Geography & Environmental Studies, which I finished in 2017, was a unique and eye-opening program. It wasn’t your typical single-subject degree, and that’s what I loved about it.

The classes covered a fascinating range of topics, from how our minds work (psychology) to the way landscapes are shaped (geography) and the environmental challenges we face (environmental studies). It gave me a well-rounded understanding of the world and the complex relationship between people and the planet.

The Lecturers were passionate about their fields and encouraged us to see the connections between these seemingly different disciplines. For example, we might explore how environmental factors influence our behavior in psychology, or how geographic location affects environmental issues in geography classes.

One of the highlights for me was the program’s emphasis on real-world application. We didn’t just learn theories – we participated in field trips, conducted research projects that combined psychological and environmental aspects, and even learned how to use GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software. These practical experiences were invaluable and helped me develop critical thinking and research skills.

While this program might not be for everyone (it required juggling multiple subjects!), if you’re interested in understanding the world from a psychological, geographical, and environmental perspective, then the BA in Psychology, Geography & Environmental Studies at NWU is a great choice. It’s a challenging but rewarding program that equips you with a unique skillset and a deeper understanding of the world around us.
