I studied primary education teaching at a faculty of education between 2004 to 2008. My first impression of the faculty was very positive. It was a low, bright building decorated with various student artworks, which created a welcoming and inspiring atmosphere.
However, I was quite disappointed with the study program itself. I had an impression that the majority of what we studied was not relevant for my future role as a teacher (a good teacher). We had a lot of subjects per semester (about 15/semester). Which felt overwhelming.
Although I have a natural ability for learning, this programme made studying less enjoyable for me. I ultimately did not pursue a career in teaching, although I recognise this was not solely due to the programme itself, but also my own choice of field.
I also felt that the balance of subjects did not match my interest. There was too little in-depth mathematics, psychology or biology. While pedagogy and didactics did not resonate with me personally, I acknowledge this is partly subjective, as I may not have chosen the most suitable field for my interests.
Overall, my evaluation is influenced by personal fit, but I still believe that, at the time I studied, the programme structure was not well optimised. Not because it was not adequately preparing students for the teaching profession, but rather because the structure was not creating GOOD teachers.

View moreUNIPO is a bad and completely disorganised learning institution. Every bureaucracy that is possible to be hand over to the students is, while all mistakes, even those done by the institute’s departments, are insidiously fined. This system abuses even such things as choosing subjects (where, of course, the information provided is poor or in some cases – personal experience – even contradictory).
The institute may be able to give you a bump into certain directions, but this reality is only a thing because of 2 things. Firstly – because of absolute reliance on student’s self-study, and by that I don’t mean going through notes and figuring out what presentations and seminars were about. No, I mean knowing a topic (e.g. ancient China) and having to figure out by yourself where to look, what to look for, what is important and what is not, and then being promptly disappointed at the exams when you fail to get into enough depth or width that is required to answer random question from your examiner.
Secondly – because of contemporary trend of knowledge gatekeeping, where even small papers are published behind unacceptable paywalls. Even the University Library, as they like to disguisingly call it, is simply a borrow system in which you blindly browse by means digitally exclusive, while not being provided any actual information about each work by the system itself. Talking about the system, I wonder how it just so happens that each and every webpage which you need to use is and usually not only unintuitive but straightly chaotic and failing more often than not. The fact that most of the webs which should provide you with information haven’t been updated since 2010’s seems to help.
FOOD & ACCOMODATION
The quality of food in the canteen is quite low (I am often amazed how wrong it can go even with simplest of recipes) and lunch is available only MON to SAT, while supper is available only MON to FRI (at Friday you will receive it at lunch so enjoy it cold). There is no breakfast.
Accomodation is not great, especially with its dumb organisation, but at least it seems to be generally warm and rainproof.
IMPUDENCE
These exact people, or at least a good handful of them, are then offended by the “lack of respect” from using a wrong degree title or even not saying hello to people you have not ever seen there, or which could be easily mistaken for older students. The audacity of their vulnerable boasted egos is peculiar. And feel pity for those there who are actually good teachers and respectable human beings, for being thrown into one bag with the rest by being part of this excuse for education.
