My review of ВГЛТУ (IT student perspective)
I’m studying Information Systems and Technology at ВГЛТУ, and here’s my honest take.
The good parts:
Teachers are knowledgeable, and the core IT subjects like databases, networking, and programming are covered pretty well. The labs have decent computers, and you get hands-on practice. Tuition is cheap compared to most universities, so you get good value for your money. Also, the groups aren’t too big, so you can actually ask questions and get help.
The downsides:
Some courses feel old or theoretical — not always up to date with what’s used in real IT jobs. Also, this is a forestry and tech university first, so IT isn’t their main focus. There aren’t many tech clubs, hackathons, or modern software engineering courses. You’ll need to learn some things on your own if you want to work in web dev, AI, or modern frameworks. Admin stuff is slow too — lots of paperwork.
Overall:
ВГЛТУ is fine if you want an affordable IT degree and are ready to study extra by yourself. You’ll get the basics, but don’t expect a top-tier tech education. It works, but you have to push yourself.
If you’re self-motivated and on a budget, it’s okay. If you want cutting-edge IT, look elsewhere.
View moreThe Voronezh State University of Forestry and Technologies in Voronezh is a specialized public university mainly focused on forestry, engineering, and industrial technologies. Founded in 1930, it offers bachelor’s programs across technical and applied fields, but its strongest expertise is in areas like forestry engineering, transport systems, and industrial technologies rather than pure IT.
For an IT-related bachelor’s program, the university does provide courses such as information systems and technologies, but they are not its core strength. Compared to top Russian technical universities, its research output and global ranking are relatively modest (around 351–400 in EECA rankings), which may affect international recognition.
Overall, VSUFT can be a decent option for basic technical education with lower competition and costs, but students looking for strong, modern IT training and better career opportunities may prefer more specialized IT universities.
