What Is a Computer Science Degree?

The passion for technology can lead you to choose the specialisation of Computer Science. This field has become increasingly popular in recent years, the development being so rapid that people are trying to keep up with it.

A Computer Science degree deals with the theoretical and practical foundations of information technology and computers. The scientific part merges with the practical one in various algorithms, information processing or in computational models. This specialisation often aims to study methodological processes, making representations on a computer, storage, or accessing information.

At the same time, the study of Computer Science focuses on the learning of programming languages, which are extremely important for any student. Python, C ++, Java are just a few of the programming languages that are explored in depth by students in order to solve the applications received from the faculty. Furthermore, on the labour market, programming languages are highly appreciated and integrated, being a useful tool for optimal performance of industries.

Benefits of a Computer Science Degree

The most important skill that young people learn following this degree is the use of programming languages. Once they grasp the logic of programming, they will easily be able to master the languages and build or develop WEB applications. Additional skills that are acquired can be: network design and engineering, software engineering, multimedia design. In addition, classical skills such as teamwork, leadership, problem-solving or time management are also gained by students.

According to recent studies, 6 of the 10 best jobs chosen by graduates are linked to Computer Science. These include Web Design, Computer Support Specialist, IT Operations Technician or Database Administrator. Moreover, the employment rate is favourable to the students, being over 70%. Due to the rapid advancement of technology, it is expected that the supply will grow in the future, requiring computer science specialists in any field.

Computer Science Degree Structure

To study Computer Science, students can either pursue university courses or follow courses online, depending on their availability and income. Online or outside-university courses include disciplines such as: Information Systems Management, Game Programming, Web Development, Network Fundamentals. They usually have a duration of 2 years. Although these courses provide important skills in this specialisation, students may be disadvantaged when competing with a student who has a Bachelor’s Degree. Some of the most important campuses in the world include Penn State World Campus, University of Massachusetts, Lowell (The Division of Online Learning and Continuing Education), Saint Leo University.

The Bachelor in Computer Science lasts around 3 to 4 years, depending on the university. Throughout the programme, students acquire mathematical knowledge, theoretical and practical foundation in programming. Some of the subjects discussed are: Computer Programming, Data Structures, Databases, Algorithms, Linear Algebra, Probability Theory or Statistics. These vary according to the curriculum of the university.

A Master’s program complete the students’ necessary career skills. In this way, they have a greater understanding of computing softwares, tools, packages, and computer architecture.

There are Master programs that can be followed even by those who have not undertaken undergraduate studies in Computer Science, such as those offered at the University of Birmingham for example. These programs can take either 2 to 5 years.

A PhD program is especially dedicated to those who want to research or become university professors and can last between 4 to 5 years.

    Could have been better

A lot of one’s academic achievements come down to personal effort and interest in the subjects being taught. A university is supposed to facilitate that process, however this university falls short in a few areas:
    – Communication Channels: A major drawback of the university is its heavy reliance on the website announcement board for communication, rendering student email addresses practically redundant.
    – Class Recording Policy: During the pandemic, the ability for students to record classes proved highly beneficial for exam preparation. However, the university’s lack of clear rules regarding class recording indicates a missed opportunity for a simple and valuable solution. Implementing guidelines for recording lectures would greatly enhance the learning experience for students.
    – Support for International Students: Regrettably, the university falls short of providing adequate support for international students. During my time as a student, our series consisted of approximately 10 international students, but since the lectures were not conducted in English, they faced a lot of difficulties in understanding the course material, resulting in all of them dropping out within the first semester.
    – Professionalism of Staff: The use of personal email addresses by staff members for official communication is unprofessional and jeopardizes the university’s reputation. Requiring the use of official email accounts would enhance professionalism and secure communication channels.
    – Security Risks and Data Protection: The university’s internal website poses significant security risks, potentially compromising students’ personal data. Addressing these concerns through robust security measures and data protection protocols is crucial for safeguarding student privacy.

This being said, there are also areas where the university has shown progress:
    – Quality of Teaching: The majority of teachers at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca demonstrate dedication and passion for their subjects. While exceptions exist, the overall commitment of the teaching staff positively contributes to the learning experience.
    – Investment in Infrastructure: The university’s investment in new laboratory buildings and infrastructure improvements is commendable. These efforts enhance the learning environment and provide students with valuable research opportunities.

    Prestigious university

The curriculum is pretty decent. I think they have way too many classes, but overall they’re not bad. A lot of laboratories and practical experience, which is nice. There are a lot of Erasmus agreements, Bosch teaching their self-driving cars course, entrepreneurship classes. Pretty diverse extracurricular themes.
EUROAVIA was the student association that I loved the most because they had a lot of interesting events. Visiting the Air Traffic Control Tower at Cluj Airport, the military base at Câmpia Turzii or the Airbus maintenance workshop, you have a lot of aviation-related events to go to.

It's not for the faint of heart

It is a faculty in which you encounter many difficulties, but it also has many benefits
A major problem would be the lack of passion and interest of some teachers who prefer to let the students learn “from the classes” instead of teaching them the subject

Can choose to study in English

Overall good. The programs are related and can be studied in Romanian or English. It has only engineer related programs hence a minimum of 4 years is needed in order to complete any field you may choose.

Good to find out what you really like

My programme (Automation engineering) had a varied array of subjects, so we have received basic knowledge but didn’t go into much depth. It was a good starting point for finding what you liked, but if you wanted to get a job in the field after university, you had to do a lot of studying by yourself. Plus that many courses and subjects were pretty much outdated, or not focused on the current demands.

    Equipped

Equipped well with well-prepared professors at laboratories and seminars. Not all lecture professors give their best. You require some extra time and effort to learn and understand some topics. It’s cheap to study. Overall a good start for your career.

    Great University

This is my first year at the University, studying Automation and Computer Science. The teachers are professional, friendly and they really know how to give a lecture. The lab rooms are modern and well-equipped.
What really helped me to accommodate were the kind people from the student organizations.
After one semester here, I can say I don’t regret choosing this University.

Decent equipment but too far away

This university has a lot of newly bought spaces, but they are too far away. So if you want to work while being at university it’s going to be a drag and this will impede you very hard. Also, everyone says that the last year is the easiest, but not here, you have a lot of projects during the semester, and the exams session is very hard.

    Is it worth it?

Well not going to lie, it’s extremely hard, some professors don’t give their full interest in the course and sometimes even the homework is hard and requires a lot of your “free time” to do it. You might go through several breakdowns, but after this hell, you most likely are going to work in an IT company and get paid enough to make it worth it.

    Great Technical University

It is a very good technical university. Some teachers are really nice and passionate, but unfortunately there are also some that just come to read from the slides. It would be nice to have a more comfortable environment in the buildings, like having a place to hang out if you have some free time between classes. I like that there are a lot of available jobs for students and the faculty is in a center location.
