Studying pharmacy at the university of Uyo has been both rewarding and challenging. Before I got admission to study pharmacy, I was of the opinion that pharmacy is basically counting of drugs and dispensing drugs to patients. I was able to relate to a lot of courses in my first year because they were basically science courses like biology, physics and chemistry. I mean, I learnt that in secondary school. But in my second year, I realized that pharmacy is more than just counting of drugs. I was introduced to foreign courses like pharmacognosy, clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutical microbiology.

Pharmacognosy was where I learnt that one medicinal product can have ten constituents. The collection of medicinal plants was a gab between practice and theory.I also learnt incantation and other things that made me embrace herbal practice. Pharmaceutics on the other hand made me realize that pharmacist literally correct prescription mistakes made by physicians. Like, the clean up the mess they never created and if they don’t do it right, they are jailed for it. That was when I realized that pharmacy is indirectly a one way ticket to jail. Scary right? I was scared too. But that is why we being taught communication skills, attention to details, manner of approach because as a pharmacist you can’t afford to make mistakes.

However, there is room for improvement in terms of infrastructure. The large class size made it difficult to get individual attention. Despite these challenges, the experience has helped me build problem-solving skills and resilience.

I would recommend this programme to students passionate about healthcare and pharmaceutical sciences.
