My years in Obafemi Awolowo University have been really impactful and entertaining. The university provides a serene environment for learning and extracurricular activities, backing its motto “For Learning and Culture.”
In my first year at the school, I met a proscribed Student Union, and this led to the students not having a direct voice, causing a hike in prices, transport, and general living conditions. However, at the end of my first year, the Student Union was reinstated, and we were able to enjoy the full package. The university student body provides an ample day teaching schedule and a vibrant nightlife envied by all and sundry.
The few cons about the school are the lack of maintenance culture leading to recurrent dilapidated structures and hostels. Housing is not optimally available to students on campus, and the majority have to move off campus after their first year, exposing them to vices.
The learning and teaching conditions are fair, with adequate lecture theaters but substandard public address and presentation systems. Students are often crowded in classes with little to no space for adequate movement; however, to compensate for this, the lecturers are stellar and really care about the learning journey of the students.
Obafemi Awolowo University is a prestigious institution boasting of a widespread alumni body ranging from thriving politicians, athletes, musicians, doctors, and businessmen. The emphasis on greenery makes it one of the most beautiful locations in the country. If OAU is part of your choice of schools, you might not enjoy the best of infrastructure, but the lifestyle and the solid academic scheme will blow you away.
