What Is a Philosophy Degree?

Contrary to popular belief, Philosophy degrees are not just about sitting and wondering about the meaning of life. This type of degree gives students a wider perspective about how to tackle different issues – thus preparing them for the outside world.

Philosophy degrees are shaped in such a way that encourages candidates to make use of logic and ethics for the in-depth study of fundamental issues.

Therefore, Philosophy enhances interpretive, analytical, imaginative, critical, and communicative skills. Candidates will acquire intellectual capacities which are of utmost importance for self-fulfilment and active participation in public life. In addition, they will experience success in a wide range of careers, such as law, business, education, journalism, and so on.

Benefits of a Philosophy Degree

The essential benefit gained from having a Philosophy degree is the mindset you acquire. Graduates learn how to constructively tackle major problems and come up with the best solutions.

Studies have shown that Philosophy is one of the most sought-after majors in Humanities in the market place. Why? The answer lies in the creative mindset and set of transferable skills that can be applied in various areas of expertise, not only Philosophy. What employers appreciate about Philosophy graduates is their problem-solving and thinking skills as well as their organised way of laying out information.

Last, but not least, those who pursue a Philosophy degree acquire numerous life skills, which can be applied both on a personal and professional level. Thus, they grow as individuals, through effective communication, critical thinking and the ability to see a problem from different angles.

Philosophy Degree Structure

Philosophy courses are usually three-year commitments and they come under the form of a Bachelor of Arts. The major concentrates on the history of Philosophy, Arts and Humanities, Social Sciences, Justice and Values and so on. Furthermore, they can be easily combined with other minors.

    Eye opening

My university is considered the “first and best” university in Nigeria. Parents want their children to go there, children as well want to go because it’s considered an opportunity to go to my university. I titled my review eye opening because although I’m in my third year I have learnt so much from my lecturers; Prof. Oyeshile, Prof. Agulanna, Prof. Afolayan, Prof. Adegbindin, Prof. Ukpokolo, Dr. Akoleowo, Dr. Layode among others who have imparted. As a philosophy student my discipline isn’t considered career oriented so people tend to ask what I want to do when I finish. I have ideas that haven’t been brought to fruition, but most of all I want to be successful. My university hasn’t just given me knowledge, it has brought me to meet some amazing people, my best friends, friends and acquaintances from various faculties and departments through events organised by departments, faculties and even the student union. Fun all the way but still organise study sessions when needed. As every student would say “my school is the best”, I’m saying my school is the “first and best” university in Nigeria.

    Poor research exemplary

My experience at the University of Ibadan during my postgraduate years was a mix of intellectual growth and frustration, particularly regarding the research aspect of the program. While the institution boasts a rich academic heritage, I found the lack of practical guidance from lecturers on conducting research to be a significant drawback.

There seemed to be a gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application, leaving many students, including myself, feeling lost when it came to independent academic research. Lecturers often emphasized concepts without providing the necessary tools or frameworks for us to navigate our research projects effectively. This deficiency hindered our ability to develop critical research skills and left us relying on trial and error rather than a structured approach.

Overall, while the University of Ibadan has the potential to be a leading institution for postgraduate studies, addressing the shortcomings in research mentorship is essential for nurturing competent scholars ready to contribute meaningfully to their fields.
