The years I spent at Esut were like an illusion, a mirage and a nightmare. I would trek about 1.7 km to and from classes every day. The classes were boring because there were no good textbooks for each course and some of the lecturers themselves delivered their lectures as though it’s not their field of endeavour but were probably hired to, at least, man such courses to avoid a vacuum. Mostly, you would notice copy and paste sort of lecture notes or handouts when you sometimes ran across a similar textbook used by lecturers, at the University dearth of basic textbooks library. Which made my field of study, electrical and electronics engineering, unambiguously boring, uninteresting and mysterious. Consequently, you would notice most students pay the lecturers in other to pass their courses. I went to the University without knowing about ninety five per cent of what was going on in classes, what they were teaching and how I managed to pass my papers. However, few lecturers and professors were extremely good in their field of expertise, judging from their excellent course delivery besides the course handouts. Sports and social amenities are grossly inconsequential and unavailable except for an undulating football pitch. The good things I can remember the school for, was the wonderful friends and classmates I had back then, some of whom I’m still relating with up to date and the low and affordable tuition fees. The school lacks basic accommodation of their own but would rather rent buildings from their owners and sublet to students. Maintenance of such hostels scattered at different areas of the Enugu metropolis was extremely poor. There are no pipe borne water in about eighty five percent (85%) of the hostels. But electricity supply was very good. Moreover, antisocial behavior was equally worrisome in the school premises and environs, with clashes between rival cult groups leading to injuries, maiming and sometimes, death. The University back then, was not of international repute and I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone. Conclusively, however, the school had myriads of avenues to improve upon, starting from recruiting qualified lecturers. Secondly, the school Library need to be fortified with the relevant textbooks of international standard and Internet facilities. Thirdly, decent hostels and sporting facilities need to be provided to improve the socio-physical total well being of the academic community.
