What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

Studying medicine in the University of Calabar back in 1996 was a great experience. I really enjoyed learning about the workings of the human body and we had some great lecturers. However, we had to travel between campuses for lectures from other faculties in year one. In our clinical years we also had to travel across town to the teaching hospital and by the time we moved to the hostel beside the hospital, the hospital had started moving to the permanent site so the travelling continued.
Nevertheless, I had so many great colleagues in my course and other courses who made great friends. Then we had thriving Christian fellowships whose programmes I really enjoyed although I never got to be part of any

    My experience in Unical

The University of Calabar has experienced lecturers in the coursed offered. My course, Bsc Physiology had 5 professors, 3 PhD Holders and the remaining lecturers were all Msc holders or Medical Doctors as the case may be. I was given both the Clinical aspect of Physiology and the practical laboratory experience needed to function in various this field. I would recommend this University for studies in Medical Sciences

    The educational system

Focusing on its academics, facilities, and student life, the University of Calabar is a public research university located in Calabar, Nigeria. It’s one of the most respected universities in Nigeria, and it’s well-known for its programs in agriculture, education, and engineering. The university has excellent facilities, including a modern library, state-of-the-art laboratories, and well-equipped classrooms.

However this is slowly facing away partly due to the mismanagement of the the school resources, non chalancy of the students and the overall poor educational system in Nigeria.

But it is worthy of note that the doggedness and unity of the students are very impressive coupled with the active involvement of the lectures to ensure the success of this students.

Overall i would recommend the school for anyone looking for affordable study in Nigeria

Review of Unical from a First year student

I am in my first year but I think my opinion is valid too. I used to hear so much about Unical’s Radiography program but I did not fully believe. When I got in later last year, I was gobsmacked by the facilities, and devices equipment we were shown at the Orientation. Then my classes started and certain Professors were MIA. I don’t think the Zoology professor ever showed up even for a day. Classes were jampacked and some students had to stand or sit on the bare floor. That was a huge shock for me and I was utterly perplexed. In terms of accommodation, there isn’t much of a problem for the boys as many boys prefer to stay off Campus thereby freeing up more space for those who intend to stay on campus. There isn’t one international person I’ve seen yet but I strongly believe we don’t have a lot of international students at this school. The career prospects are looking very bright as Radiography and Radiological sciences are leading the world of medicine today. They don’t call us the eyes of medicine for no reason. Would I recommend it to people I know? Yeah, I would, I’ve had a good time so far.

    My Experience

Well, I enjoy unical because of the buildings and surroundings. Radiography is a course not for the weak. MY lecturer is very strict but he really cares about our needs. The facilities in unical is top-notch, the hostels are not so great. The classrooms in my department are okay, also near and tidy. It’s a great school.

What are the down sides in the department of Radiography and the university as a whole?

    The Stress

Well, I think this is one of the worst learning institutions there is. The academic standard is very poor, zero interest from lecturers to educate students, poor facilities, you’re better off learning on your own but in the end, it’s the certificate or degree that matter so. There’s nothing I learn about the school and definitely, I wouldn’t recommend it.

    Unical

I think unical is a great school (kinda)😂 but lots of improvements could be done to make it even better and give students a better experience while they are there, like building larger classrooms to accommodate the student population and also more conducive hostels.
