My experience at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University has been both educational and challenging. The university provides a good academic environment with lecturers who are knowledgeable and dedicated to their work. The Computer Science programme covers a wide range of topics that build a strong theoretical foundation in computing.
However, one major challenge is the lack of practical opportunities for students to apply what they learn in real-life situations. There are limited hands-on sessions, outdated lab equipment, and few industry collaborations that could help bridge the gap between theory and practice. This makes it difficult for students to gain the technical experience needed to compete in today’s job market.
Despite this, the school still offers a peaceful learning environment and encourages discipline and hard work. With better investment in practical facilities and exposure to real-world projects, ATBU could become one of the leading universities in technology and innovation in Nigeria.
View moreStudents at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) encounter several challenges that affect their academic and personal growth. Irregular academic calendars caused by strikes and administrative delays often disrupt studies and extend graduation periods. Poor infrastructure, including inadequate lecture halls, hostels, and laboratory facilities, also limits effective learning. Many students face financial hardship due to high living costs and limited scholarship opportunities. In addition, poor internet access and unstable electricity hinder research and online learning. Mental health issues such as stress and anxiety are common, largely due to academic pressure and insufficient counseling services. Furthermore, security concerns within and around the campus affect students’ safety. Addressing these issues through improved infrastructure, stable academic systems, financial support, and enhanced welfare services is essential for improving students’ academic performance and overall university experience.
View moreUniversity can be a transformative experience that offers unparalleled intellectual, social, and personal growth. For the right person, it is an invaluable investment.
However, it is also a significant financial and time commitment that is not the only path to success. The “right” choice depends entirely on the individual.
My advice is always to: Research specific schools thoroughly, talk to current students and alumni, have a clear understanding of your goals, and carefully weigh the costs and benefits before making a decision.
My years at ATBU Bauchi were marked by both rewarding and challenging experiences. Despite a high lecturer-to-student ratio of nearly 1:30, I acquired valuable knowledge, formed lasting friendships, and developed resilience. The institution maintained well-equipped laboratories for my field, emphasizing practical work, which greatly enhanced my learning. However, the journey was not without obstacles, including power outages and delays that tested my patience. Ultimately, these experiences collectively contributed to my growth, preparing me to face future endeavors with strength and wisdom.
