What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

    Kenya’s Agricultural Powerhouse

Egerton University, one of Kenya’s oldest institutions of higher learning, is widely recognized for its strong emphasis on agricultural and environmental studies. Located in Njoro, Nakuru County, the university offers a serene and green environment ideal for learning and research. Its main campus is particularly known for spacious grounds, relatively low levels of urban distraction, and a peaceful atmosphere that allows students to focus on their academic work.

On the positive side, Egerton University has a proud legacy of academic excellence, especially in agriculture, animal sciences, education, and natural resource management. The institution boasts well-equipped laboratories, experienced faculty, and partnerships with research institutions both locally and internationally. Its graduates are generally considered competent and well-prepared, especially in practical and scientific fields. The university also supports co-curricular activities, with active student clubs, sports teams, and outreach programs that promote holistic development.

However, like many public universities in Kenya, Egerton faces several challenges. Students have occasionally experienced delays in academic calendars due to staff strikes, administrative issues, or funding shortfalls. Infrastructure, while decent in core faculties, can be uneven across departments, and some facilities may feel outdated. There have also been concerns regarding responsiveness of administration and access to modern digital resources, particularly for students in non-agricultural disciplines.

In summary, Egerton University offers a solid academic foundation—particularly for students pursuing agricultural and environmental sciences—but could benefit from improvements in infrastructure, administrative efficiency, and modernization across all faculties. It remains a reputable institution, but one that needs continued investment and reform to meet the changing needs of higher education.

    Appreciation

“What I liked most about my university course was how it challenged me to think critically and solve real-world problems. I enjoyed the practical aspects, like fieldwork, group projects, and case studies, which helped me apply theory in a hands-on way. It also helped me build strong analytical and communication skills.”

“What I didn’t enjoy as much was that some units felt overly theoretical and less connected to real industry applications. While they were important for foundational knowledge, I always preferred the parts of the course that were more interactive and directly linked to real-world scenarios

    Reliable Communication Channels

Egerton University has the best communication channels that favour every student. There are reception numbers, administration numbers and staff hotline numbers that students can dial and call for any clarification and inquiries. Communication is taken seriously in this university and proper information is addressed on the notice boards and SMS channels. I love how quickly they respond to issues that are being addressed by students.

    My personal thoughts

The university is quite big and offers quality education. But I personally feel in my programme I am being fed too much theory which in the real world won’t help much. I prefer lots of practicabilities but the percentage we are being offered in our programme is quite low. Another thing is its location for Kenyan students I don’t think they will find a problem with it but for international students, it may be a little bit challenging hence the low number of international students on its main campus.
