What is an Accounting & Finance degree?

An Accounting & Finance degree focuses on the management of monetary resources available to an organization. Such a degree is aimed at students who want to pursue careers in investment analysis, management, banking, auditing, consulting and financial management. It teaches students how to assess the assets and liabilities of an organization financially and manage the financial risk of their activity.

Accounting & Finance covers the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting and finance but also includes other aspects of the business activity, such as financial management and control, corporate finance, company accounts, investment and business law. Optional module options provided by different universities around the world often allow students to specialize in a particular area such as auditing, taxation, etc.

Benefits of an Accounting & Finance degree

The completion of an Accounting & Finance degree comes along with numerous benefits. Students develop strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly demanded by employers in both the private and the public sector and result in graduates often finding employment in large multinational organizations that offer professional services such as PwC, KPMG and Deloitte. On top of that, established companies around the world offer excellent and well-structured graduate schemes, which help Accounting & Finance graduates to kick-start their careers.

Accounting & Finance degrees are mostly practically oriented. They allow students to put the knowledge and skills they acquire on a daily basis to practice through simulated and real-life business accounts management and work placement opportunities.

Most Accounting & Finance degrees are professionally accredited by professional bodies, such as ACCA, AIA, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, which provides students with the opportunity to become chartered accountants. Students gain professional qualifications in accountancy, which eliminates the need for additional certifications after graduation.

Due to the nature of the Accounting & Finance Degree, which complements business-related subjects, students often have the opportunity to complete a joint honours degree.

Accounting & Finance Degree Structure

An Accounting & Finance degree’s duration varies depending on the country and degree level. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting & Finance can be completed in three years. However, universities also offer students the option to take a sandwich course, which allows them to undertake a year-long placement between their second and third year, which extends the course to four years. Four years is the regular time of completion of this degree in other countries, such as the United States.

The first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance introduces the core principles of accounting and finance, including financial accounting, management accounting and finance as well as economics and business law. The second year’s focus is usually on managerial and business economics, financial control, corporate finance and company accounts, but optional modules might enable students to pursue their interests in other aspects of Accounting & Finance such as auditing or strategic business analysis. At this point, students studying at Higher Education Institutions in the UK could choose to take an industry placement in order to apply the theoretical concepts and the acquired knowledge to practice in the professional environment. The next stage of this degree is dedicated to further-developing students’ knowledge of financial and management accounting. Optional modules might enable students to specialize in a particular area of their choice such as auditing or taxation in some countries like the UK.

Masters’ degrees in Accounting & Finance usually take between 12 and 18 months to complete depending on the country that students choose for their studies.

Research-based degrees, such as MPhil and PhD, can take anywhere between 1 and 7 years depending on the country and type of degree. MPhil degrees in Accounting & Finance in the UK usually take 12 months if it is studied full-time and 24 months for part-time studies. PhD degrees in the UK, on the other hand, take about 36 months to complete if studying full-time and 72 months for a part-time program. In the US, students may be required to dedicate between 4 and 7 years on their degree.

    Top Marketable & STEM Courses

The University of Nairobi (UoN) is Kenya’s premier institution, and its reputation comes from a blend of strong academic factors and distinct operational challenges. An honest opinion highlights its status as a major regional player while acknowledging common student pain points.

    🤩 Likes (The Strengths)
    1. Academic Prestige and Employability
A degree from UoN carries significant weight in the East African job market. The institution is highly ranked in the region, leading to high employment outcomes for its graduates.

    2. High-Calibre Faculty and Research
The university employs many renowned professors and experts who are often considered industry and thought leaders, ensuring students learn from the people shaping national policy and practice. UoN also maintains a strong research culture.

    3. Prime Location and Networking
Its main campus location in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) is an unparalleled advantage. It provides easy access to internships, the corporate world, government offices, and global organizations, enabling unmatched networking opportunities.

    4. Vibrant and Diverse Campus Life
As a hub for students from diverse cultures and nationalities, the university provides an electric environment. It has active student politics (which serves as a major training ground for future leaders), numerous clubs, and opportunities for co-curricular activities.

    😫 Dislikes (The Challenges)
    1. Administrative Bureaucracy and Delays
This is a frequent and significant complaint. Navigating the administration—from registering for units to resolving issues like “missing marks” or securing documentation—can be notoriously slow, complex, and frustrating.

    2. Inconsistent Infrastructure
While the university has some modern facilities (like the UoN Towers), many hostels and older structures are aging, leading to overcrowding and maintenance issues that affect the quality of student living.

    3. Intense Academic Pressure and Large Class Sizes
The university maintains a rigorous academic standard, which can be stressful. Coupled with large class sizes in popular programs, the individual student-to-lecturer interaction may be limited, demanding high levels of self-discipline.

    4. Disruption from Industrial Action
UoN has historically been susceptible to student or faculty strikes, which can disrupt the academic calendar and delay graduation timelines.

    Personal Review - Kenyatta University

Attending Kenyatta University as a Bachelor of Commerce student majoring in Finance was a transformative experience. Graduating in 2022, I left not only with academic knowledge but with life skills that have proven invaluable in my professional journey.

The finance program was thorough, with well-structured coursework that built a strong foundation in financial management, accounting, and economics. The lecturers were knowledgeable and passionate, pushing us to think beyond theory and apply what we learned to real-world scenarios.

What I loved most about KU was the diverse student body and supportive learning environment. Collaborating with peers from different regions and backgrounds helped me grow socially and intellectually. The campus itself had great facilities, especially the library and ICT resources, which were essential during research-heavy semesters.

Of course, there were challenges—administrative delays during registration ,results or transcripts processing could be frustrating at times. However, it taught me patience and the importance of following up proactively—skills I now use regularly in professional settings.

Would I recommend Kenyatta University? Absolutely. Especially to students looking for a university that values discipline, independence, and academic depth. KU prepared me well for both the workplace and life beyond graduation.

    My Experience as an Undergraduate

My experience at Kenyatta University was excellent, I got a chance to participate in different clubs that majorly supported my field of study. The Library is huge and has all you need to pass and expand on your intellect aside from class activities.
Unit registration was slow since you had to line up for it back then but now with this technology things might have changed for the better.
I would recommend anyone to study there.

    Strengths, Challenges, and Considerations

Kenyatta University (KU) is an institution that offers a broad range of academic programs, a spacious campus, and an environment conducive to learning. Having spent time evaluating the university, I can say that it has a mix of strengths and areas that could benefit from further development.

One of the most notable aspects of KU is its campus. The university is set on a large, green campus that provides a relatively peaceful and serene environment for students. This is particularly appealing for individuals who value quiet, open spaces conducive to study or reflection. The campus is well maintained in certain areas, with modern buildings housing departments and lecture halls that provide good facilities for learning.

The academic offerings at Kenyatta University are diverse, which is a major advantage for students looking for variety in their studies. Whether one is pursuing degrees in education, business, engineering, or health sciences, KU provides numerous options. In terms of affordability, KU stands out as one of the more budget friendly public universities in Kenya, making it an attractive choice for many students. The quality of teaching varies across departments, as is typical in many universities, with some lecturers being highly regarded for their expertise and teaching methods, while others may not meet the same standards.

That said, there are a few challenges that prospective students should consider. One of the main issues at Kenyatta University lies in administrative inefficiencies. The processes around registration, obtaining academic transcripts, or resolving student queries often involve long waiting times and a level of bureaucracy that can be frustrating. For students accustomed to faster, more streamlined processes, this can be a major downside.

In addition, while the university has made significant strides in infrastructural development, certain facilities still require improvement. This is particularly true for the student hostels, which many have described as overcrowded and under maintained. The university has room for improvement in terms of providing high quality living spaces for students. Moreover, while the Wi-Fi infrastructure is available, it often struggles with reliability, especially during peak hours, which can be an issue for students who need to access online resources regularly.

When it comes to campus life, Kenyatta University does offer a variety of student clubs and societies, which can provide enriching extracurricular opportunities. However, compared to some other institutions, the campus social scene can seem somewhat subdued. The lack of a vibrant student nightlife or a well established network of cultural events may deter students looking for a dynamic social experience.

In conclusion, Kenyatta University is a reputable institution with a lot to offer, particularly in terms of academic diversity, affordability, and a peaceful campus environment. However, there are clear areas that could use attention, particularly in the areas of administration, infrastructure, and campus life. Students considering KU should weigh these factors carefully, especially if they value modern facilities and efficient services. Ultimately, KU remains a solid choice for students who are looking for a calm, affordable university experience but may not be the best option for those seeking cutting edge amenities and a fast paced, highly active campus life. He best option for those seeking cutting edge amenities and a fast paced, highly active campus life.

    The Molding Place

The Kenyatta University is a second home to me. I joined as a child but through the great values inculcated by our lecturers, I came out a grown and mature adult. Not only were we taught on academic excellence, but also on how to navigate life and add value irrespective of the underlying circumstances. Seeing the person I have become, I would 100% recommend this school. Other than that, the school is adorned with trees and vibrant green grass, creating a serene and picturesque environment. The harmonious blend of nature’s elements also lends a refreshing atmosphere that is conducive to learning and relaxation.

    Kenyatta University's Diverse Learning Environment

I appreciated Kenyatta University’s emphasis on group work, diverse lecture formats, including lecture halls, and the provision of swimming classes. The addition of a new library further enhanced the student experience. However, I hope they prioritize improving the hostel areas for better student accommodation.
