As an international student in the Master’s in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology program at the University of Bologna, my experience has been a mixture of intellectual growth, real challenges, and strong personal development. The academic content is demanding and incredibly interdisciplinary. The structure, particularly with integrated courses (where multiple subjects are evaluated as one grade), can be intense and sometimes unclear, especially for students unfamiliar with the Italian university system.

The professors are experts in their fields, and while some are very supportive, others expect a high level of independence, which can feel overwhelming at first. However, if you’re proactive, you’ll find resources and help when you need them.
. The campus is genuinely beautiful — modern architecture, clean facilities, bright lecture halls, and state-of-the-art laboratories. It’s well maintained and gives off a peaceful, focused vibe that helps with productivity. There are plenty of open spaces to read or take breaks, and the environment feels very “science-forward” — like you’re in a real hub of biotech innovation. Even though it’s a little bit away from the city center, the quiet surroundings help you stay focused. When the sun is out, studying on campus honestly feels great
