Overcoming Challenges and Thriving at HUJI

Studying at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem was a transformative experience for me, but it didn’t come without challenges. Coming from a private school where my education was entirely in English, with Arabic as my mother tongue, the transition to studying in Hebrew was tough. To even apply, I had to complete a full year of intensive Hebrew studies and take the psychometric exam alongside my GCE grades. The first year of university was overwhelming—I had to navigate a new academic system while still improving my Hebrew skills.

However, as time went on, I found my way. The university’s academic excellence pushed me to grow, and I was fortunate to study sociology and anthropology at one of the top institutions in the world. I also had incredible opportunities—traveling with the university, securing a student job, and receiving help from fellow students who supported me as I adjusted to studying in Hebrew. I eventually found ways to make my academic life easier by incorporating optional English courses into my schedule.

Socially, the university offered a vibrant student life with various events and activities. While being an Arab student presented some challenges due to political tensions, I still managed to carve out my own space and engage in the academic and social opportunities that enriched my experience. Despite the difficulties, my time at The Hebrew University was invaluable, shaping my academic and personal growth in ways I never expected.
