A great sector for building a strong knowledge at your subject. A good guidance from the well trained professors. Extra curricular activities are also well maintained along with education. Good exam patters as well.
View moreStudying English Literature under the UGC CBCS curriculum has been a mixed experience for me. On one hand, the syllabus itself is remarkable, offering exposure to incredible texts across periods and genres. For which, I am really grateful.
However, the way the system functions often undermines the true value of this curriculum. The focus is heavily textbook based, with exams rewarding long, predictable answers rather than critical thought or original interpretation. Individuality and freedom of perception are rarely encouraged. In my experience, many students attended classes only for attendance and not out of interest in learning. And the system seemed to be designed to enable that.
What I missed most was an environment that nurtures curiosity, debate and independent exploration of ideas. The structure pushes students to chase a degree rather than pursue knowledge.
Overall, I would not personally recommend this program for those seeking a dynamic, discussion driven education. But for those who are comfortable with textbook oriented learning and conventional examinations, it may serve its purpose.
As a current student at the University of Calcutta, I’d say it’s a place steeped in history and academic legacy. The faculty are experienced and genuinely supportive, particularly in the arts and sciences. Our sprawling library—with over a million books and journals—is a scholarly haven for long hours of study . The campus life has its highlights: lively cultural events, sports facilities, and a vibrant student community that makes for rich experiences beyond textbooks . Still, it’s not without its flaws: outdated infrastructure in certain departments, bureaucratic admission or counselling mishaps, and inconsistent placement support can be frustrating
View moreCalcutta University is a storied and academically rich institution that best serves students who appreciate deep theory, heritage, and research-based learning. Calcutta University may not have the infrastructure and industry alignment of newer private institutions, but it has the depth of history, academic rigor, and low overall cost that make it a excellent selection, particularly for students from Eastern India. One disadvantage of this university is student politics. Student politics play a significant role on campus but it can be a double-edged sword creating space for debate and leadership but occasionally disrupting academics.
