What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens

National and Kapodistrian University of Athens is one of the most famous universities with many departments. In the Department of Psychology, teachers are highly knowledgeable and teach in an interactive way. Although they could make the lecture more practical rather than theoretical. Moreover, there is a mandatory internship and an optional dissertation. Nevertheless, the facilities where the courses take place are inhospitable and unsafe. My biggest complaint is the reduced service of the secretariats of many departments. However, the master’s degree in clinical psychology is one of the best in the world.

    Worthy but demanding

What I liked the most about my MSc is the deep knowledge I received, the group papers and the multiple ways the professors used to teach (videos, presentations etc.). The most difficult part was the amount of work that was needed during the semester, which doesn’t allow any free time, let alone having a job.

University of Athens: prons and cons

It’s my first year studying in the department of psychology, in the national and kapodistrian University of Athens! I’m fascinated by the opportunities offered by the department! The proffesors are really well qualified, keen to help their students and they work hard! The department itself not only offers lots of extracurricular programs, such as the Erasmus but also give us the option to choose 52% of our degree classes, giving us the chance to orient our degree before our master! Studying and getting university books is completely free! The website and the e-class work perfectly and make it really easy to use! The secretary is also really helpful, though it’s rarely available due to lack of staff! The main disadvantage for me is the lack of organisation in the department and the poor installation! The building doesn’t offer much and is too small for several classes with a big audience! Nevertheless, I believe that the advantages outweigh the cons!

University of Athens: prons and cons

I study in the department of psychology, which is in the Philosophy department of the UOA. The professors are amazing, really well qualified and keen to help their students! The department offers the ability not only to master the school you have chosen, but also to participate in many extracurricular programs, such as Erasmus, and also gain general knowledge by giving us the possibility to choose classes from different departments of UOA such as history, law etc. All these are added to our CV, and in a way give us the ability to give our degree an orientation before our master. Studying and gaining university books is completely free. My only complaint is the lack of organisation in the department and the installation!

    High quality of education

I think it’s a great university! The consistency of the teaching staff was crucial to the course and the completion of the studies. I would highly recommend the Capodistrian!
