What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

    My University of Ghana Experience

My experience studying Psychology and French at the University of Ghana has been a blend of positive and negative aspects. On the positive side, the Psychology department boasts some truly exceptional professors. Dr. Ernest Darkwah, in particular, made Psychology for everyday living incredibly engaging through their use of real-world case studies, their clear explanations of complex theories. The department’s focus on research opportunities, practical application has been valuable. In the French department, I’ve appreciated the opportunity to practice conversational French, the well-structured curriculum. However, access to certain resources, like specialized software for language learning, has been inconsistent. The administrative processes, particularly registration, grade processing, can be slow and frustrating. Furthermore, the library’s collection of psychology and French resources could be expanded. Despite these challenges, I believe the University of Ghana offers a valuable education in both Psychology and French, and I’m committed to completing my studies here. The strong academic foundation provided, coupled with the opportunity to engage with a diverse student body, makes it a worthwhile experience.

    A Well-Rounded University Experience

I’m currently halfway through my bachelor’s degree at the University of Ghana and so far, it’s been a really solid experience. The diversity of the student community is one of the highlights, allowing for exposure to different perspectives and cultures.
The professors are knowledgeable and approachable, always ready to offer support and guidance, which makes the learning process smoother and more engaging. The course contents are pretty much engaging but what I really enjoy is the balance between theory and practical application. We’re constantly working on group projects and case studies, which helps make everything we learn more relatable to real-life situations.

One of my favorite things is the flexibility in the schedule—it’s great for someone who’s also juggling part-time work. The professors are approachable, and even though the workload can be intense at times, there’s plenty of support if you need it. I’ve definitely learned a lot, and I’d recommend the university to anyone looking to gain practical skills alongside their degree.

It’s a great place to grow academically and personally.
