GEORG-AUGUST-UNIVERSITÄT GÖTTINGEN is one of the best research universities worldwide. The academic research facilities at the university helped me nurture my research skills and enabled me to write better. I truly enjoy the innovative classroom experiences, that is more focused on practical than theoretical knowledge.

This is my second semester in the MA programme in English Language, Literatures and Cultures. So far, I like the program and how it fucuses on different issues rather than on main thing. It is multicultural and well diversed with students from all over the globe. Actually, this multi-national atmosphere is an advantage of the program; you get hands on experience of every culture and ethnic background, and for a Humanities student that is awesome! The university has great facilities and is very international friendly. It is equipped with large libraries, and the University Library SUB is the dream of every scholar. And to top it all, the university has a huge sports center which contains a gym, a pool, indoor and outdoor climbing and many other facilities. For me, I highly appreciate being active after a tiring school day, so going there is my favorite part of the day!
As for Goettingen, it is the perfect city to start up from if you have just arrived in Germany. It is your typical friendly college town. Everyone here speaks English and they are very hospitable. And the living expenses here are kind of low compared to other big cities.
And now we come to the nasty part, what needs to be improved?
As for the university, they need to provide a more active role for the International Office. When I first got here, I was literally clueless, I had zero idea about the German education system and made several mistakes that could’ve been easily avoided if some guidance were provided. So, counceling for international students is a must have.
Another thing every student suffers from in Goettingen is the accommodation. Every student here has experience the hardships of finding a place to stay when they first came here. I guess it’s a common issue in any crowded college town, but it could be solved by creating a local couch surfing network made up of families in Goettingen who are willing to temporarily provide accommodation for new arrivals till they find a place to stay.
Finally, we conclude with every student concern, finding a part time job!
Actually, since it’s a college town, it has many part time job opportunity isn’t that hard. However, if you do not speak German, that would be almost impossible to find.
All in all, Goettingen is a great choice to study in Germany and I advise every international student to come here and have the education experience of a lifetime.

Well, the years I’ve spent in Göttingen were a hell of an experience with a lot of ups and downs, but overall it was an awesome experience. The program was diverse and easy to follow, even though the modules were a bit confusing at first. The teachers are the best part, they were helpful, super polite and were always there whenever I needed assistance and guidance. I’m not going to talk about the facilities because well…it is Germany. The only bad thing I want to highlight is that finding a job in a small city like Göttingen can be a little challenging, especially for someone who doesn’t speak German.

For me, the academic side is what matters the most. For this side I would say that the whole program and also professors that we have in this program help us in every way possible to equip us with materials as well as the blue print to be the best version of ourselves.

As a student coming from Turkey, I was afraid that I would not be able to catch up with the workings of German higher education. Upon seeing the various topics the programme offer, I was astonished by how many different subjects I could focus on from Medieval Studies to North American Studies. Having the freedom to choose between a variety of courses enhanced my enthusiasm to study. Since I am planning to pursue an academic career, the approach of my professors was highly important for me, and one of the reasons why I am content with this programme is the friendly and encouraging behaviour I encounter each time I talk to the professors. The module system that is organized in a way that enables the students to proceed from the beginner’s level to an advanced one is highly effective in creating a classroom environment where everyone feels competent and encouraged. That’s why I definitely recommend this programme to my colleagues who are in search of a friendly environment where they can improve themselves and have fun thanks to the well-designed seminars and lectures offered by the University of Göttingen.
