Nowadays, more and more students start to pursue a degree in modern languages. A modern languages degree is not only related to learning a new language but also understand the cultural context of the countries in which the language is spoken.
Candidates studying a modern languages course will also be given knowledge and experience of the political and historical contexts of a particular region. On top of that, the use of literary texts and media will develop not only their skills but also their perception about learning a different language.
Due to the increased globalisation, there is a high demand for modern languages graduates. The ability to communicate in another language and understand its background is a major advantage.
Modern Language courses are designed to give students transferable skills, which can be applied in all areas of activity. Candidates will have high communication skills, accompanied by data collection and interpreting skills, which are appreciated by employers, regardless of your career choice.
Modern Languages Degrees are four years commitments, out of which one semester or a year should be spent abroad – in a partnered institution. This gives students the opportunity to practice the language they are studying and understand a new culture.
Modern Languages is a degree that can be studied either as a single honour degree or a joint honour degree. This gives students the ability to combine modern language with another course such as politics, literature, history and many others.
Studying at Humboldt University has been a great experience, mainly because of how international and diverse it is. I’ve met people from all over the world, and it’s been amazing to exchange ideas and learn from different perspectives. The mix of cultures and backgrounds makes discussions super interesting, and it’s definitely helped me see things in a more global way.
View moreIn my opinion, Humboldt is a great university with excellent infrastructure and a lot of benefits for the students. A very affordable semester fee is charged which also includes the public transportation ticket, allowing the students to move freely around Berlin. I’ve also taken part in languages courses offered by the university, which were good and also affordable. One thing I didn’t like was the curriculum of my course but nothing related to the University structure. In general, I would definitely recommend Humboldt.

View moreI liked the multidisciplinary approach. But I did not like the curriculum and the staff attitude. I enjoyed the central location and the classrooms and the toilets. I would not recommend it to people who want to have a literature degree.
View moreMy program’s (British Studies M.A.) scope embraces a very interdisciplinary approach in education. My classmates are coming from all around the world, having varying backgrounds and morals. So one can not feel alienated here, especially in this program. University campus is huge but to be able to join and more active one need to be bold, curious and enthusiastic plus willing to learn. In general, all programs here requires first individual work then teamwork, more than listening to the professors and taking notes only. University has lots of opportunities for students, especially international ones but since the number of them is enormous it’s very hard to enrol or participate. Also some of the classes, at least in my program feel like recurring itself in some cases (having 3 classes about politics
