What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

Pleasant study environment and good teaching methods

Student life there is very pleasant, the teaching staff often shows concern for our well-being.
Even though at times we find ourselves overwhelmed with work, they do their best to try to distribute the work fairly over the weeks.
The speakers are really top-notch, they take the time to explain things to us, give us personal feedback and care a lot about our success.
The atmosphere in class and overall in the school is really great, with regular events organized by the student union and we also have many clubs!
Obviously, you have to persevere, but with good organization, everything goes smoothly! Mutual support among classmates is also super important!

What more could you ask for?

I am in my second year of 3D animation at Rubika, and the school never ceases to impress me. The classes are taught by working professionals who are very skilled at their jobs. They give excellent advice and we progress very quickly, all in a pleasant working environment with a great mood. I did another science program before, and it was nothing like this. Working in these conditions allows you to flourish; you are constantly supported and guided by the teaching team. I highly recommend Rubika!

    My rating speaks for itself.

I’m a student there and i absolutely love it. The city of Valenciennes can be a negative point ,but for the school as itself I have a great experience and I’m not the only one.
The student really have a power there on how and what they want to learn and I believe that why it works so well. There are even people in place for potential problems that can occur outside of school if we need help with physical and mental Health, Money or paperwork. Because a lots of student live alone for the first time when they enter this school. I learn a lot and I have a great time. If you are someone that like challenges and structure while learning tou will definitely love it.

    Life in Rubika

I’m in 3D second year in Rubika and so far i felt really good in this university : In terms of education, I’m really happy of how we get to discover a bit of every work you can find in a film production pipeline. With this, we can in our promotion find all our speciality. The teachers are all mostly nice, and alongside what they are teaching us, they also sometime share their life as freelance artists and it’s really interesting having different points of view of how we can work outside of school.

A thing that also stood out to me is the many conferences the school organize for the student to also be open to many subjects and artist coming to explain the story.

In general I really like the cursus of Rubika, it’s indeed quite tough sometimes to keep up with all the work but the school’s atmosphere, the people and the events keeps you invested.

    Rubika's programme

I believe Rubika School has significant advantages, largely due to its long history.

Indeed, it is one of the oldest schools in France teaching animation and video games, and this longevity has allowed it to acquire expertise in teaching methods as well as credibility with companies recruiting in these fields.

Furthermore, the courses are led by industry professionals, making the teaching more relevant as it prepares us for the realities and challenges of the industry.

    Great school for creativity!

I’m currently studying Game Art. The teaching methods are very student-focused. The courses are supplemented by semester-long projects centered around video games to give us as much real-world experience as possible. We receive genuinely constructive feedback from our instructors on our projects.
