I completed my full academic journey at the University of Caen Normandy as a french citizen, starting with a BSc in General Biology, then specializing through a Master’s in Microbiology and ultimately completing a PhD in the same field. Overall, the expreience was very positive.
Caen itself is a true student city and the university reflects taht energy. The mains campus (1 and 2) are large and lively. The university is also notably international, with a significant number of foreign students which adds an enriching cultural dimension to the campus life. The cafeterias (RU) and librairies (BU) are quite good and well-suited for student life.
In terms of work, the schedule can vary quite a bit depending on the day, but this actually leaves decent time for independant reading, revision, and personal activities. The university also offers a wide range of extra activities, including sports clubs and infrastuctures and student associations, making it easy to find a good balance between academics and social life.
As for professors, the quality can be quite uneven, especially at the undergraduate level. That said, my experience with the Microbiology faculty was overwhelmingly positive. Most were approachable, passionate about their field and genuinely enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge.
