Adama Science and Technology University (ASTU) offers a unique academic environment with a strong focus on engineering and applied sciences. The specialized programs, particularly in renewable energy and environmental engineering, are noteworthy and align with Ethiopia’s growing emphasis on sustainable development. However, despite the potential, many students feel the gap between the university’s ambitious vision and the reality of its implementation. Resources in labs often fall short, and there are frequent power outages, disrupting the flow of research activities. Housing is a significant issue, with on-campus dormitories overcrowded, and off-campus options often expensive or unsafe. The city of Adama itself, while vibrant, can be challenging for students, with limited public transportation options and rising living costs. The campus does foster a sense of community, with various student-led initiatives tackling pressing social issues. Yet, the university’s governance and bureaucracy can sometimes be a roadblock to student-led reforms, leaving students feeling unheard.
