Looking back at my three years in law school

This opinion is made in respect of the Juris Doctor (“JD”) and Postgraduate Certificate in Law (“PCLL”) programmes at the Chinese University of Hong Kong only.

The Law Faculty engaged well with the student body and was responsive to their academic needs/wishes. For the most part, the professors and lecturers were personable, helpful, and instructive – some even undertook a mentoring role. The class sizes, grading system and diversity of electives in the JD programme were fair and conducive to learning. The Law Faculty also made strong efforts to educate students on local career prospects. Finally, the seminars carried out through the Faculty’s Centre for Rights and Justice provided students unique opportunities to hear from experts on niche areas of public law and current legal issues.

Students should be presented with a wider range of career considerations. For instance, there could be more preparation and information for students who wish to join the bar, pursue a legal career outside of Hong Kong, undertake further studies (i.e. LLM / PhD). The PCLL programme could also offer more electives such as family law mediation. In general, there could be more effort made in developing and pointing students towards street law/clinic programmes, international internships, scholarship and grant opportunities.

Overall, I had a terrific experience. I made great friendships, developed some strong networks and built a solid legal foundation for my future endeavours.
