Overall, I would say my experience at UofT was very positive. However, due to the university’s emphasis on maintaining a high level of academic rigor and prestige, professors would often apply strict bell curves or adjust grades downward if the class performed particularly well. This could be stressful, as there was sometimes only room for one or two A grades, meaning that even work that met A-level standards could be curved down to a B.

I overall enjoyed my time as a double Major (Psychology and French Co-op) at the University of Toronto, specifically the Scarborough Campus. There were a number of resources available to succeed, such as the Academic Writing Centre, the endless study spaces throughout the Campus and the wonderful library and online catalogue of academic materials. My professors all seemed to be kind and made a sincere effort to help their students, and there are plenty of extracurricular activities that students can partake in, such as the Women in Leadership Initiative, which was a great experience for me. As for my programs specifically, I do have a couple of complaints with the French Co-op portion. Firstly, I did not think that there were enough positions made available to students specific to the program (my first co-op job did not have me speaking French at all, but it was the best I could get at the time). Secondly, as for the classes themselves, while some classes do include the materials and histories of non-white authors, most of the classes were taught by white professors, on exclusively white authors’ works. As someone who is not white and frequently sees the racism and xenophobia of the Francophone community get ignored, this was deeply troubling. I did submit an anonymous review of the program where I asked for change, and since it had been a few years since I graduated, perhaps things have improved. But I would still recommend to students to look into the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus because of the positive qualities I mentioned above, as well as the fact that it is a smaller campus, which makes it easy to navigate between classes, as well as the co-op program, while not perfect, did provide me with great opportunities.
