My Community Studies degree at CBU blended psychology, sociology, criminal justice, and practical community intervention courses, building a strong foundation for real‑world community work. After 17 years of community work and social work practice, I still use the lessons I learned from this program.
I loved the applied research projects (such as COMS210, where I scored 80%) and the course that critically reflected on the UN declaration on the right of the child (PSYC379/395), which sparked my passion for case management and policy. CBU’s partnership with College of the North Atlantic made my transition smooth with 48 credits right away.
Challenges included inconsistent course pacing and limited focus on northern/remote areas relevant to my Nunavut career path (which I am sure has evolved over the years). Still, the reflective essays honed my communication skills, and I’d recommend it to anyone eyeing community or nonprofit roles. CBU gave me practical tools that launched my government program work!
