Student review [#67832] for Criminology
at Saint Mary’s University

During my 4.5 years at Saint Mary’s, I had the opportunity to take a wide range of classes that, unless they were a first year intro course, were fairly small. I truly appreciated the ability to get to know professors and classmates while still being exposed to an array of student backgrounds, experiences, and knowledge.

I completed a BA in Criminology and Psychology and most professors for these programs were wonderful. It can always be a mixed bag, but this area of study seemed to attract some very interesting and fun teachers.

The campus is small, so sometimes it can be a fight for study spots or the much-dreaded Tim Hortons lineup, but it is also really nice to not have to rush across the city between classes.

I have knocked off a star for a couple of reasons: for one, I did have a very hard time with a few different professors that were incredibly unprofessional and rude. Secondly, I was unable to complete an honour’s degree as my last year and a half was taken over by COVID when all classes went online. I realize that nobody could have prepared for something like this, but the quality of education diminished drastically during this time and there seemed to be no acknowledgement or reparations attempted for this. I found it difficult to get extra help or contact from professors, the learning experience was brought down to watching lectures on your own time and blindly doing assignments, and we still had to pay for seemingly unusable campus fees.

Overall, I did love my time at SMU and I couldn’t see myself studying anywhere else. I just wish we were taken care of a little better during the 2020-2021 period.
