What is an Accounting & Finance degree?

An Accounting & Finance degree focuses on the management of monetary resources available to an organization. Such a degree is aimed at students who want to pursue careers in investment analysis, management, banking, auditing, consulting and financial management. It teaches students how to assess the assets and liabilities of an organization financially and manage the financial risk of their activity.

Accounting & Finance covers the core areas of financial accounting, management accounting and finance but also includes other aspects of the business activity, such as financial management and control, corporate finance, company accounts, investment and business law. Optional module options provided by different universities around the world often allow students to specialize in a particular area such as auditing, taxation, etc.

Benefits of an Accounting & Finance degree

The completion of an Accounting & Finance degree comes along with numerous benefits. Students develop strong analytical, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are highly demanded by employers in both the private and the public sector and result in graduates often finding employment in large multinational organizations that offer professional services such as PwC, KPMG and Deloitte. On top of that, established companies around the world offer excellent and well-structured graduate schemes, which help Accounting & Finance graduates to kick-start their careers.

Accounting & Finance degrees are mostly practically oriented. They allow students to put the knowledge and skills they acquire on a daily basis to practice through simulated and real-life business accounts management and work placement opportunities.

Most Accounting & Finance degrees are professionally accredited by professional bodies, such as ACCA, AIA, CIMA, ICAEW and CIPFA, which provides students with the opportunity to become chartered accountants. Students gain professional qualifications in accountancy, which eliminates the need for additional certifications after graduation.

Due to the nature of the Accounting & Finance Degree, which complements business-related subjects, students often have the opportunity to complete a joint honours degree.

Accounting & Finance Degree Structure

An Accounting & Finance degree’s duration varies depending on the country and degree level. In some countries, such as the United Kingdom, Bachelor’s degrees in Accounting & Finance can be completed in three years. However, universities also offer students the option to take a sandwich course, which allows them to undertake a year-long placement between their second and third year, which extends the course to four years. Four years is the regular time of completion of this degree in other countries, such as the United States.

The first year of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting & Finance introduces the core principles of accounting and finance, including financial accounting, management accounting and finance as well as economics and business law. The second year’s focus is usually on managerial and business economics, financial control, corporate finance and company accounts, but optional modules might enable students to pursue their interests in other aspects of Accounting & Finance such as auditing or strategic business analysis. At this point, students studying at Higher Education Institutions in the UK could choose to take an industry placement in order to apply the theoretical concepts and the acquired knowledge to practice in the professional environment. The next stage of this degree is dedicated to further-developing students’ knowledge of financial and management accounting. Optional modules might enable students to specialize in a particular area of their choice such as auditing or taxation in some countries like the UK.

Masters’ degrees in Accounting & Finance usually take between 12 and 18 months to complete depending on the country that students choose for their studies.

Research-based degrees, such as MPhil and PhD, can take anywhere between 1 and 7 years depending on the country and type of degree. MPhil degrees in Accounting & Finance in the UK usually take 12 months if it is studied full-time and 24 months for part-time studies. PhD degrees in the UK, on the other hand, take about 36 months to complete if studying full-time and 72 months for a part-time program. In the US, students may be required to dedicate between 4 and 7 years on their degree.

I currently attend Carleton and I really enjoy it. The folks who attend this college are mostly what draw me there. They are all incredibly considerate and loving, and they all give back to the neighborhood. The norm, I believe, is Carl is kind, open-minded, liberal, and highly interested in the news.

    Business Student Carleton Experience

The Carleton University Business program has shown to be of decent quality. The program has quite a few well-versed professors that are engaging and reasonable. However there are some professors that are significantly less engaging and provide less clarity in lessons in comparison to others. This could cause the pool of professors to be a bit of a mixed bag. The program itself has a reasonable workload. The new Nicol Building provides students with modern technology in the class room and charging stations at each desk for their devices. The campus provides an ample amount of leisure locations such as lounging and food areas and a quality library as well. Overall solid experience.

    Carleton University - BCom Program

As a first-year student just having entered university in the midst of a global pandemic, it would be easy to quickly jump to the negative aspects of the online school year. However, the Commerce program at Sprott School of Business (Carleton) has in my opinion made an ample amount of compromises for their students. Business is a very communication-oriented, collaborative and interactive program. In the business world, you are constantly working with uncountable different personalities which you need to be prepared to adjust. As difficult as this can be online, my program has accommodated these needs in different and efficient ways. They have organized interactive workshops, provided us with collaborative opportunities with different business organizations, and directed us to available employment and volunteer options. The asynchronous classes leave room for flexibility in our busy time schedules, and so far most of the professors I have had this year have been helpful, thoughtful and enthusiastic about what they have taught. The school demonstrates internationality in the sense that it comprises a very diverse group of students, as well as provides multiple foreign language courses for those interested. In terms of career prospects, I do believe the Carleton business school provides students with a significant number of opportunities- one of these being a mandatory course every business student takes called: Employability Passport. This course devotes all of its attention to preparing students for their future careers. You learn tips and tricks to master your resume and cover letters, complete volunteer work/workshops that are very beneficial for your resume, and build networks. I am only a first-year student, but I feel pretty confident in this school and program so far, and would definitely recommend it to others.

    Sprott School of Business

I thoroughly enjoy the variety of courses offered within my program. The Carleton Sprott School of Business allows commerce majors to attain full knowledge of the different aspects of business. This includes courses such as information technology, supply chain management, marketing and entrepreneurship. Aside from giving students the opportunity to learn about distinct aspects of business, students are also given the option to select a distinct path by selecting a concentration (marketing, finance, accounting, international business, etc.). In addition, my programme offers real-world experience through a plethora of job, co-op and internship opportunities; furthermore, various workshops focused on networking, resumes and cover letters are made available to students. Nevertheless, one area where my programme could improve is the student-advisor relationship. Often, it is difficult to contact advisors and to even receive a straightforward answer. However, I am aware that the pandemic has had a detrimental effect on the efficiency of this communication and I look forward to major improvements in the upcoming semester. I thoroughly enjoy my selected programme and I am confident that other students would likely see the Sprott School of Business as an institution of development and opportunity.

    Overall atmosphere and experience

My first year at university was an overwhelming experience since it was my first time studying in a different country. Gave me a chance to expand my social network and connect with a lot of people from different countries. The atmosphere around campus is just calm and very encouraging.
