What is there to say about the Université de Montréal ? Well, the first thing I have to mention is that I study cinema and, more precisely, screenwriting. I can’t speak about the other programs that are being taught at the school, but there is an overall aura of pretentiousness emanating from the teachers, because this university is considered the best French-speaking one in Canada. Even while it is probably true, it remains the sixth-ranked university in Canada according to Topuniversities.com, so I’m pretty sure they don’t get to trash on other universities like I’ve seen many teachers do.

Now if I get into the nitty-gritty of what I’m actually being taught as a screenwriting student at Université de Montréal, well to be honest, it’s not that impressive. I’ve learned more in a few weeks on YouTube about screenwriting than I did at the university in a year. I feel like what I’m taught is mostly useless aspects of categorization instead of actual meaningful insight on how to write compelling scripts, which is annoying to me.

On a more positive note, the people are really nice to each other. Student life is incredibly fun and it’s hard not to get immersed in the mood of being a student in Montreal. There are a lot of activities organized by the university or by students, which makes it easy to meet new people, find new friends, learn new things, etc. It is a profoundly diverse university, with students coming from all over the world, which makes it a significantly more fun experience as a student.

Overall I give it a 3 out of 5; great environment, weak curriculum (at least for the first year of screenwriting).
