What is a Psychology Degree?

Psychology is the favourite science for students who want to get into the depths of human feelings. This is considered to be the science of mind and behaviour. More specifically, psychology wants to explore the way people think, act, and feel, by appealing to the emotional side of people.

Passion can lead students to choose this specialisation. It is not considered a difficult one, but it is not very easy to approach, as the theoretical elements of the discipline are combined with the practical ones.

After studying Psychology, students choose to specialise in a particular sub-field. Depending on their preference, they can choose between Biological Psychology, Cognitive Psychology, Comparative Psychology, Developmental Psychology, Personality Psychology and many others.

Benefits of a Psychology Degree

Psychology is a great opportunity to get to know each other better and to get to know others. Thus, students who are looking to understanding human behaviour, feelings and mind gain an inside vision of what these notions really mean and what determines people to make certain decisions and act under different circumstances.

The employment rate among Psychology graduates has grown in recent years. Salaries are satisfactory, and young people can focus either on psychological services in schools, hospitals, treatment centres, clinics, depending on the specialisation chosen. Furthermore, Psychology graduates can integrate a career in social media, marketing, and advertising, as they understand best the reasons why people choose to make decisions according to what they see in real life.

Psychology Degree Structure

In the four years of Bachelor studies, graduates acquire the necessary knowledge to practice Psychology, initially learning the underlying theoretical notions. These notions become an important starting point in their career, seeing later how practice blends very well with theory. It should be noted that on the labour market, students who hold a Bachelor’s degree are much more appreciated and have an advantage over those who follow simple courses.

A Master’s program usually lasts between 2 and 3 years, coming as a complement to the Bachelor’s courses. Master courses have a much more loaded curriculum and a great deal of information. A Doctoral program is dedicated to students who want to do research in Psychology in various institutes or to become teachers. This has a duration of between 5 and 7 years.

    Research opportunities

The University of Calgary really prioritizes research and has many opportunities for students to get involved. Even with no previous experience, if you take initiative, there are many different possible ways to learn about the research process. This hands on experience that is offered allows students to find out more about possible careers, and teaches applicable skills that strengthens their resume for grad school or future jobs. The one downside is that there are not always as many classes offered as you would prefer in your major felid.

    Great campus, good class selection.

University of Calgary is a great place for international students to start a new life in a new country. UofC has lots of programs and several classes for you to choose from. The staff is nice, polite, and helpfull. There are lots of international students, and so there are several cultures. The teacher wil overall help you with what you need, and will want you to be intereseted in their classes. However, living in residence may be hard due to the low speed wifi, and the community bathrooms.

Research your thing? Then this is your school!

I am currently enrolled in psychology at UofC. Firstly, the application process is seamless, the advisors are exceptionally helpful. You can contact them at any time in regards to class schedules, finding your way around, and admissions, etc. They will tell you what you NEED to take and what you can take as options. I found the classes to be very diverse, fun, and educational. The material is very up to date and relevant to the time. The professors are very lively for the most part and make each class entertaining, although, there are a couple of downsides to some professors, a short-list of the professors I had lacked organizational skills and gave grades back later than they anticipated. However, this is not common from my experience. One of my favourite aspects of the University of Calgary is that there are many opportunities to get to know your classmates, whether that is joining a club, the gym, or meeting up around campus/through classes. I find that there are a lot of international students as I know personally some people from Malaysia, India, and Europe who are in my graduating year. Another thing is that there is an endless amount of research opportunities, there are high-end labs you can participate in if science is your thing and you choose a BA! The lab work is exceptionally fun!
