What Is a Medicine Degree?

Saving someone’s life is perhaps one of the most remarkable feelings in the world. Even so, not so many of us have the chance to experience this. It takes passion, a strong personality and years of study to be able to work in the medical field.

Pursuing a Medical degree is not only challenging and demanding but also competitive. Medical degrees are shaped for people who show high motivation and commitment as well as interest for sciences.

Throughout a Medicine degree, candidates are equipped with a wide range of competences, from practical abilities required for specialized hands-on tasks to communication skills needed to interact with the patients. Thus, any medical students will be able to take a simple blood sample as well as perform a complex surgical procedure.

Benefits of a Medical Degree

Undoubtedly, medicine is one of the most vital fields of work – therefore there will always be a high demand of workforce needed. The employment rate for a medical graduate student is of 90%.

Due to its diverse branches, graduates from a Medical course have a variety of career choices, according to their expertise. Nursing, radiology, anaesthetics are just some of the many specialities offered in this field. Regardless of the speciality, the most important aspect needed to be taken into consideration is that medical professionals are well-respected and well-paid all over the world.

Additionally, graduates possess a series of transferable skills, such as logical reasoning, critical appraisal, listening, written and oral communication and many others. These assets are sought and highly valuable in most fields of work.

Medical Degree Structure

Medical courses are usually a six-year commitment, but it can vary according to the university. Most of the modern universities integrate clinical education with basic sciences from the beginning of the academic curriculum, while traditional institutions divide them into preclinical and clinical education.

Most schools understand the importance of practical knowledge, especially in this field, therefore they encourage the students to observe professional healthcare practitioners. Another way to gain practical experience is to go to different clinics and receive specialised training, followed by actual practical work.

No matter the practices of the university, always keep in mind that medical courses are structured differently in every country. Therefore, medical qualifications gained in one country are not necessarily recognised in another country.

U of C just attacked its own students

As a graduate of the U of C, I previously thought they regarded students opinions and concerns. Students have been asking for months for the university to publically disclose their investments and divest from companies supporting the genocide in Gaza as students don’t want their tuition money funding death. Yesterday the students set up a peaceful encampment and protest to pressure the university to disclose this information, the U of C didn’t try to negotiate or discuss with students. Within 12 hours they sent in police in riot geat to assault their own students. Absolutely shameful, disrespectful to the students concerns and shows a university that doesn’t care about its students wellbeing, or the wellbeing of other people.

Community Rehabilitation Studies... What is it?

My program is unique as no one knows what it is. I think that is what makes it so cool. The entire program name is Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies and what makes it worthwhile is the incorporation of practicum placements within the degree. When you graduate you come out with a bunch of work experience in the community health care field that is already embedded within your classes. It is a very interdisciplinary degree as everyone in it is doing different things. Everything from med school, occupational therapy, and speech-language pathology, is like a stepping stone to whatever your interests are. I think the program is not as difficult either making it a great GPA booster if you are looking towards for example Med or physiotherapy school that requires a very high GPA to get in. In terms of the University of Calgary itself, I think the best way to describe it is the best bang for your buck school. It is incredibly cheaper than other Universities but has aspects of greek life, social life, and a great night scene. It is a great in-between from heavy party schools such as Queens/Western and commuter schools in your area. I think the University of Calgary provided me with the best well rounded experienced and being so close to the city provided me with so many opportunities to network, one that many people don’t get going to Universities in smaller towns. It is also quite diverse despite the stereotype of Calgary being the “texas” of Canada. I think it is a great option for people to look into especially if research is your calling.

Flexibility, Guidance, Opportunity: A degree that gives you confidence

I finished my Ph.D. at the UofC. Despite being a smaller university, the quality of education was of a very high level. We had world-class leaders in my field coming in to give seminars and lectures. Lots of opportunities to collaborate with other groups and build your experience. Because the department is smaller – there was a lot of personalized guidance. They push you to achieve while giving you the opportunity to take time and breathe. They also make sure you stay well connected for future job opportunities.
