What is a Management degree?

A Management degree builds a strong foundation in a wide variety of fields including business, finance, economics and marketing. It develops students’ understanding of business practices, structures, business theory, business strategy and research as well as global economies and financial markets. Doing a Management Degree also allows students to gain skills that enable them to work with financial and numerical data effectively.

Management degrees cover different managerial roles, such as Human Resource (HR) management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. They can be specialized into one of the areas mentioned above or follow a more general approach that covers most of these areas.

The range of management degrees is huge and includes Business Management, Management, Marketing Management, etc. They are predominantly offered in the business departments/business schools/management schools of different universities.

Benefits of a Management degree

One of the main benefits of this degree is that Management is a broad discipline, which keeps students’ career options open.

Management degrees could have a very practical focus, which is an opportunity for students to gain experience in the process of completing their degree before having started their professional careers. Management courses usually offer work placements and practical modules, which include business simulations and business creation in a simulated environment. Acquiring practical experience through these opportunities could make students stand out from the crowd in the job market once they graduate. Research-oriented Management degrees also exist for those who prefer the theoretical aspects of such a degree. Most courses, however, have established a good balance between theory and practice in order to meet the needs of all students.

Management degrees also prepare students to serve the managerial role across a wide range of areas, including HR management, hospitality management, innovation management, operations management, etc. Students can specialize in one particular area or focus on gaining knowledge across all of these areas thanks to the high availability of different management courses.

Additionally, there is a high demand for management professionals in the contemporary business world. Therefore, taking a management course is an opportunity for students to kick-start their careers and occupy a higher position in the organizational hierarchy.

management degree Structure

Management courses usually begin by introducing students to different areas covered by the managerial role, such as organizational management, business environment, statistics, accounting and finance, business growth, etc. After the first year, institutions allow students to explore the management discipline into more depth by delivering specialized modules and offering optional modules, which enable students to choose subjects that interest them the most and are most relevant to their career aspirations.

Management degrees take 3 years to complete in the UK. However, their duration could extend to 4 years if students choose to spend a year in industry between their second and third year, which is a popular option among the student community. The presentation is top notch!

KU Leuven so far has earned it’s spot as the number 1 university here in Belgium, the lecture rooms and presentation of everything is spectacular. However, I do believe that the idea of examinations is a dated concept and doesn’t necessarily entail the strengths of a particular student. Unfortunately, KUL relies on examinations as such.

    Good decision

In terms of selecting a university to come, you have plenty of options. Most of them are considered good choices as Leuven is on of them. Having more than 5 billion euros per year invested in the university, its education system is innovative and appealing to its students. courses are interesting and well taught.

World class education for next to nothing

The only real issue I have is that it still has the old school year format, two semesters and massive exam periods. Adopting a four-quarter system like in the Netherlands would be quite a lot better. Finally, I would recommend this university to others.

    Very academically rigorrous

KUL is very demanding, in my experience. You do have to study consistently every day and throughout the BLOCK week to pass and get good scores. On the one hand, it puts students under a lot of pressure. I don’t know a single student who is not pressured or worried, which is not sustainable, so many of them give up. Yet, I also think it might be the university’s strategy to keep only students willing to put in the effort since they accept everyone.

It doesn’t have a wide variety of student clubs if it matters to you. But it does offer other services like a psychologist, workshops, internship fairs, etc.

They don’t take attendance, assignments are rarely graded and don’t play a significant role in your final grade, and there is only one final exam, no midterms. So you have to be very self-disciplined to succeed.

Overall, I like KUL. Although it is challenging, the professors are generally nice and approachable.

Need to work on some things

Courses are hard and some classes are not well taught, we need more extra curriculars. Nice people tho, also the milestone thing is really bad bcs we don’t have as many opportunities as previous students.

    Good choice

Coming from far away, with a different culture, I believe that KUL was a great decision for me. It is a very international faculty with students from everywhere in the world. Even though you may be home sick (which is normal), you will definitely find people from your home country to talk to. The Leuven campus is great and always a great place to party as well

    It is not that bad

When I first came to Belgium, I thought that this university would be special and better than the others due to its high ranking. However, it is pretty much the same with old fashion education merely using PowerPoints and tedtalk lectures.

    Old-fashion

My expectations were higher regarding the examination system. Here, we are evaluated only at the end of the semester, which is worth 100% of my grade. Students do not get the chance to improve their average during the semester. However, the level of education is one of the highest and most difficult in Europe.
