No, you don’t need to have a portfolio. All their courses are designed to accommodate beginners. However, having a foundation in drawing, painting, photography or other visual crafts will definitely help. Having basic visual abilities before starting will give you a significant advantage.
Howest does not have a student quota for admission of new students to their programme of choice. If a student meets the general requirements and is motivated, the student will be accepted.
Howest offers limited student housing in the vicinity of its campuses in both Kortrijk and Bruges.
Full-time students have around 25 hours of class per week. However, since Howest is a very practically oriented institution, students will have to continue honing their skills outside of class by working on assignments. For each hour spent in a class, the student is expected to spend at least one hour at home training their skills. That will add up to around 40-50 hours per week in order to reach the required level of skill to get a passing grade. This amount corresponds to a full-time working week.
Howest has a vibrant international community of 117 nationalities on campus. The international students who join Howest have a significant impact on the entire student population. They bring a different and unique perspective to our campuses and global community. There are lots of activities organised specifically for international students, but also the ones that bring Belgian and international students together.
Howest’s DAE Community Team together with the students organize several weekly activities for students.
Following the Advanced bachelor of bioinformatics in Howest Hogeschool, I have to say that is a really well structured program that targets to bridge the gap between theory and working environment and give you the necessary supplies to build up your future ! Professors are are really approachable and willing to help you.
View moreThe accessibility of the faculty stood out even from before I enrolled, during the info days. This support continued throughout the program, as class groups were fairly small. This allowed lecturers to give personal feedback. The guidance carried on through my semester abroad, which brings me to another highlight of my time as a student: the range of opportunities from studying or doing an internship abroad.
View moreCurrently I am a 2nd year student at the Digital Design and Development Program. It is challenging, but in a good way because it pushes you to grow both technically and creatively. The eduction is quite practically-oriented. You also get to work on real projects that simulate professional situations, which helps you understand what working in the digital industry is actually like.
The classes are well-structured and cover a wide range of skills, from design and front-end development to UX/UI, etc. The lecturers give concrete feedback and take the time to help you improve at consults. The workload can be intense at times but at the end results are always very rewarding and worth it.
I would recommend DEVINE to students who are passionate about digital design and development and want a program that prepares them well for a career in the field.
Overall, I enjoy this program so far. I’ve learned a ton of things and remain motivated to continue learning until graduation.
Bruges is a beautiful and peaceful city; it’s cool to discover it and live in it.
Also, the university helps students a lot (e.g Stuvo) and put a great effort to make you feel welcom and shows a high interest to take care of their students in their multiple aspect (organisation, psychologie, etc.)
It’s easy to talk to teachers and also get answers via email. I’m always getting proper information from the staff, and I am never left without an answer, which is a great point!
I wanted to give 4 stars at the beginnig due to a certain lack of communication and organisation for certain courses, but I choose to keep it 5 stars because I started this program with an interest for Cyber Security and now it becomes more than that, I’ll not say “passion” as everyone use to say, because passion is a very powerful word that I which I’ll get closer to it by the end of this degree!
Sincerely,
Youssef
View moreOverall, I would rate the Industrial Design programme very positively. I like the programme because it gives me a lot of hands-on experience in the field, not just theoretical knowledge. Through different projects, I am able to develop in many aspects of the profession, such as concept development, material experimentation, technical skills, and critical thinking. The programme helps me understand how design works in real contexts and allows me to grow both creatively and professionally.
View moreMy time at Howest University of Applied Sciences in the Digital Arts and Entertainment (DAE) program, majoring in Game Graphics Production, was both challenging and rewarding. The curriculum pushed me to develop strong technical and artistic skills, with a clear focus on industry standards and hands on learning. Through intensive projects, deadlines and constructive feedback, I grew significantly as a game artist. The program fostered intense discipline, creativity, and problem-solving, preparing me well for professional work in the game industry.I look forward to learn more and see the opportunities that Howest gives me.The lecturers are not only here to grade you but to see you grow, help you and teach you important aspects of being in the game industry.
View moreI’m about to finish my bachelor in Howest, and looking back at the 3 years spent studying here, I can definitely say that the education offered here is very professional and up to date. I would have never expected that in only few years I would be able to learn coding and making good digital products at such a high level as I am doing now. The studies were very intensive, and I see that a lot of people extend their education to 4 years (that’s also a bit of a warning for those who expect to definitely study only 3 years). I have not much bad things to say, except how sometimes we – Digital Design and Development students – feel a bit left out from Howest, because we’re not located in the Howest area, and in order to get the same opportunities as our other peers, have we have to travel to the main campus (Penta). Other than that, I’ve met so many new people from different parts of the world, so many memories. I recommend 😉
View moreThe students and the atmosphere are great. Most of the teachers know what they are doing. And what I like the most is that you really get to learn everything from zero and you can specialise in subjects you like the most.
View moreIt is a very demanding place, you have to work a lot but the reward is worthy. Being able to connect with a company in your internship and the group projects are one of the most valuable things from the DAE programme.
