The University of Tasmania was founded in 1890 after the abolition of overseas scholarships as a way to free up funds, and Richard Deodatus Poulett Harris became its first warden of the senate. The classes started out with only 3 lecturers teaching 11 students from 22 March 1893, once the University House had been renovated. In addition, there was a great encouragement of female students to enroll in the institution, which was heavily criticised. By the First World War there were over 100 students, and several Tasmanian graduates had a relevant role in law and politics. During the Second World War, the classes were taught by local graduates, as there was a big war effort during these years. In the early 1960s, The University of Tasmania transferred to a brand new campus at Sandy Bay. With an increase in the federal finance budget, Medical and Agricultural Schools were established and the sciences obtained proper laboratories, which led them to achieve global recognition in astronomy, while other departments attracted good scholars and graduates which were celebrated in many fields. Since then, the university never stopped growing and expanding, as now it has 3 big campuses, and many other satellite campuses.Show more
The University of Tasmania offers a solid foundation for students pursuing public health, with a strong focus on community health and research opportunities. But I find the course structure slightly rigid, limiting flexibility in elective choices. Also, support services for international students could be improved for a smoother academic and cultural transition.

Regarding the course I am enrolled in, there are many well-organised online resources, and the classes are relatively small, which is good for us to interact with lecturers.
There are some fantastic lecturers at UTAS. My experience during placements was one of extreme negligence and toxicity. I was not supported, on fact it was so bad that durind a six week placement i saw my facilitator 5 times during which he was aggressive, smelt of alcohol, i could go on and on. I did seek help but was told he was very experienced, nobody listened. This was my final placement before graduation. He subsequently failed me though i had consistent excellent feedback from staff, but he was not present, nor seemed to care. It felt personal towards the end. The stress was so bad I broke out in hives and my face swelled up. The stress of working so hard at such a high standard then being overlooked, not supported, including when I sort help from more senior staff at UTAS, and to then be failed was a pure case of injustice and it has harmed me to this day.
View moreThe university is good for science and medical fields but the fine art degrees are lacking in specialties. I do a bachelor of design and most of my knowledge came from my own research and practical skills instead of the degree in itself. The degree was fine just it lacked structure for the real world and that’s apparently an issue for other majors as well.
View moreThe University of Tasmania does have its faults as a place to study, yet it is generally a good place to study for its cultural and natural environment. As an UTAS student, you enjoy the foods, drinks, events and libraries, the support. However, UTAS can improve in providing employability programs for its business students like other universities.
