What Is an Art and Design Degree?

It is considered that generation Y is the generation with the most creative minds. Thus, millennials tend to express themselves through various forms, such as Art and Design.

Degrees in Art and Design aim to empower students to use art as a tool for self-expression. This degree is designed to develop visual perception as well as visual literacy. As a result, students gain practical skills in order to turn their imaginative ideas into reality.

Unlike many programmes, Art and Design courses improve students’ attention to detail, creative thinking, and freedom in the decision-making process.

Benefits of an Art and Design Degree

Art and Design is a competitive industry. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to be equipped with the necessary skills to have higher chances of being employed in this field.

In general, graduates from this degree have a wide range of employment options once they finish their studies. The advantage of an Art and Design course is that you are highly employable for other industries too – there are numerous courses that would help to develop specialised skills for specific careers.

Some particular job areas include – apart from being an artist – community worker, fashion designer, graphic designer, illustrator, advertising executive, and multimedia worker. Many Art and Design graduates find themselves using their skills in marketing, media, or even teaching.

Art and Design Degree Structure

Art and Design degrees are part of Bachelor of Art (BA) Degrees. Courses’ structure and length depend on what type of programme you choose to study and the country where you choose to study. Usually, Art and Design courses are a three-year commitment, although there are countries – like the USA – where you need to study for at least four years.

The most remarkable aspect about this degree is that it emphasises the practical knowledge. Courses are often taught in studios, as a form of workshops. Additionally, students are assessed based on their portfolios of work, which may be exhibited to the public.

Bachelor of Digital Business review as a graduate

Having completed the Digital Business programme at RMIT University, I can say it offers a well-balanced mix of technical know-how and strategic insight. The curriculum begins with solid grounding in information systems, e-commerce and data analytics, then shifts into applied subjects such as digital transformation strategy, UX design and agile project management. Lecturers draw heavily on industry experience—many are active consultants—so seminars feel less like abstract theory and more like briefings on what start-ups and large corporates are actually doing. Live client projects were the highlight: my cohort developed a data-driven growth plan for a regional retailer and prototyped a chatbot for a local bank, receiving frank feedback from their digital leads. RMIT’s tech facilities—cloud labs, analytics software, and an on-campus accelerator—made it easy to test ideas quickly.

There are, however, a few caveats. Timetabling can be intense in the final year, when capstone projects overlap with elective hackathons; time management becomes an art form. Because the programme emphasises breadth, you may need to pursue additional certifications (e.g., AWS or Scrum) if you want deeper specialisation before graduation. Fees are also on the steep side, although numerous industry scholarships and paid internships help offset costs.

Overall, if you’re after a degree that marries business acumen with digital fluency and you thrive in a practical, project-heavy environment, Digital Business at RMIT is a strong choice. It equipped me with both a strategic mindset and a toolbox of technologies that translated smoothly into my current role as a digital transformation analyst.

    The facilities are top notch!

As a first-year Design student at RMIT, I am most impressed with the way the program builds a solid foundation: Drawing Basics, Design Principles and Creative Thinking courses take place in parallel, so that you can practice hand-drawing techniques while nurturing modern design thinking. At least two studio sessions a week, the lecturer critiques directly on the paper, helping me correct “hot” errors and progress very quickly. The facilities are also a big plus: Mac Lab, 3D printing workshop, product photography lightbox or Wacom kit are all ready to serve, plus the final exhibition space allows students to exhibit their work and receive widespread feedback. However, the cost of materials and printing is quite “painful for the wallet”, and the tight submission schedule can easily turn the peak week into a “deadline storm”. If you want to hone both “hand and brain” skills in an international environment and are willing to invest time, effort and budget, Design RMIT is completely worth pursuing.

    too crowded and disconnected learning

Studying Digital Business at RMIT has given me useful knowledge in areas like e-commerce, digital strategy, and data management. The lecturers are helpful, and the assignments reflect real-world business situations, which I really appreciate.
However, the campus feels too overcrowded. It’s hard to register for popular classes or find space to study. Also, blended learning sometimes lacks connection — especially for subjects that need more discussion and teamwork.
Overall, I would recommend this program for those interested in tech and business, but improvements in class size and the online learning experience would make it much better.

    Relevant curriculum, great lecturers

I’m currently studying Digital Business at RMIT University. The program provides a very modern and industry-relevant curriculum, covering topics like e-commerce, digital transformation, and data strategy. The lecturers are generally experienced and supportive, and I’ve enjoyed the practical projects that simulate real business scenarios.
However, one major downside is the overcrowded campus – it’s often hard to register for preferred classes or find a quiet study space. Additionally, the blended learning format (online offline) can feel disconnected, especially for interactive or teamwork-heavy subjects.
I would still recommend this program to students interested in digital business and innovation, but I hope the university improves class size management and makes the blended learning experience more engaging.
